Last trains which should be later

The last non-sleeper departure towards Paddington from Penzance is 1745. Come on, GWR. Heck, the sleeper is only at 2145

Only likely to be 18:15ish if it went via the B&H rather than via Bristol.

Perhaps a good reason then to transfer the route to EMR.

Same problem but in the opposite direction you would potentially lose the late departure from Lincoln. Needs resourcing from both ends (someone elsewheer said it was in BR days).

As for last trains, whilst departure trains might seem early, if it is especially long-distance you need to think about the arrival time and possession requirements down the line. GWR are surprisingly good in this regard and have a 2248 to Swansea which gets in at a rather anti-social 0227 and a 2202 to Plymouth (via Bristol) at a lovely 0210. I'd say this is against the norm and from London long-distance it really should be around 2200xx for a 3+ hour journey, 2300xx for a 2 hour journey, and 0000-0100 for the locals. Journeys ending past 0200 can't be much fun!

Some places also have shuttles running a bit later after the direct journey finishes.

The last up train Bristol is 22:00, although there is a 23:30 Saturday night only to Swindon. A bit of a shame as pre-COVID/IET cracking, there was a 22:30 off Bristol (started at Taunton at 21:40 and was a stopper, if I recall correctly).

Down train no complaints, although I'll confess I was surprised when the 22:02 (I swear it used to be 21:45?) was extended from Exeter to Plymouth. I can't imagine a huge amount of patronage west of Exeter!

23:14 back to Macc isn’t that bad… Agree that Stoke is a true outlier compared to other destinations.

There did used to be a later one to MIA. I often caught it at Carlisle around 23:37. Arrived in Preston around 00:55 and a Caledonian sleeper was usually on an adjacent platform

The 2314 to Macclesfield from Manchester is only when the 2218 last train has been cancelled - it's a replacement for it. It also connects to an RRB to Stoke at Macclesfield. It really is a joke and upsetting the last train to Stoke and Macclesfield is so ridiculously early!

I’m not sure what you’re on about? The 23:14 is a permanent scheduled service, not just put on if there is a cancellation.

I think there’s def more benefit of it providing an early morning service thru Lockerbie to Edinburgh. When that early morning one did run pre-pandemic, was it stationed at Carlisle overnight? I’d like to know how popular it was too. Not sure if TPE have arrangements there or not since there is no depot or train crew base

That late night EDB TPE service went to the airport, not just Preston. Saw a few suitcases on my many trips

That morning Carlisle to Edinburgh service came empty stock from Preston and formed a service from there a service did stable overnight and form the 5:48 to Liverpool which now starts at oxenholme instead

Surely it could have just run from Preston not ECS and become a PRE-EDB service instead?

Does the oxenholme one now come from PRE as well?

With the laltter point, it is just way of getting a set to LA. It is also set down only after Bristol.

I think it’s due to pathing reasons but surely it would be very logical. Yeah the oxenholme service comes from Preston ecs. It’s very rare it makes it there with all the TPE cancellations so just starts at Preston a lot of the time
