Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

Crap handdryers.

Literally the worst are those Dyson ones where you have to have a very steady hand to avoid touching them and recontaminating your hands, and they also amass water and associated black mould at the bottom. The mind boggles as to why anyone thought those a good idea.

Hype about design over design effectiveness, the Dyson way.

It certainly made for entertaining telly !

I believe the winner of the stingiest sandwich competition was actually a garage somewhere !
I remember a program featuring how to make BR Sandwich which showed folding a piece of ham to make it look like two slices

The Dyson dryers are, on the other hand, not ridiculously loud, and do actually dry your hands unlike some of the cheaper ones. Overly loud hand dryers are annoying, and problematic for some people.

Manchester Central exhibition centre has hand dryers with an integrated Android system which shows advertising... I wonder if they use them to target the ads by gender? They even have "Intel inside" stickers.

To be fair the more conventional square box type Dysons are fine, though no doubt overpriced.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Dislikes for sweetcorn? You absolute heathens. I did some corn on the bbq this evening. Nothing beats the flavour of chargrilled corn smothered with butter.

While we're on the subject, ban outdoor gas grills. What's the point of them? Stick with charcoal and you can do no wrong.

I agree with banning skimmed milk and pathetic hand dryers.

Related to the latter, public toilet doors which a pull to open from the inside (which is about 99.9999999999% of them). With the result that your lovely clean hands (assuming that there's soap and the dryers work!) must be recontaminated with the bacterial infestation that is the door handle...

Software developers who write code to validate addresses that rejects postcodes if you type the postcode without a space, or put accidentally put a space at the end. This is such an easy thing to cater for, literally an extra word in the code for many languages. Anyone releasing code like this should be banned from software development.

Most software developers are well lazy and/or hungover. I have been one for nearly 30 years so should know.

I was a software tester for most of my IT career, and I would often spot bugs like the postcode one mentioned above.

When the bug was reported, the response was usually "...the system is working as designed, it is up to the user to type in the post code correctly...", rather than accepting responsibility for fixing the fault, and making it impossible for the user to type in the post code incorrectly.

I could write a book on the politics of software development, and I am glad I was made redundant retired three years ago.

Or the even more serious crime of socks and sandals!
And the modern version ... socks and 'sliders'. Looks terrible, with chavvish overtones.
No arguments there.

I would also like to ban men wearing formal or semi formal shoes without socks, looks as ridiculous as the two crimes above.

In my world trainers would be the only men's footwear where socks can be regarded as an option.

I'll add to that the sites which reject a **** **** **** **** card number entered with the spaces. It is much easier to check for typos when the spaces are there.

If one on my team wrote something that was confused by spaces like that I'd bounce it back before QA even got to see it.

Yes! That too.

So people coming out of the cubicles don't "door" people who are walking past?

Anyway... I would ban:

TOCs which remove cancelled trains from the system after the event so that delay repay claims automatically fail.

Anyone who rejects valid delay repay claim more than once and anyone who charges £10 for the privilege of accepting a claim. If I can source the information in my spare time then so can someone paid and trained to do so.
Rail Staff who are trained in ticketing and work it as there job and cannot understand the complexities then what chance has joe public got on there first train trip, so ban staff until they know every fare rule off by heart.

Instant food and drink. Coffee, Soup and the worst Tea, Powdered Milk and Gravy. It takes an extra few seconds to heat up a tin of soup, Coffee granules taste chemical, and instant tea and milk!! it takes exactly the same time to make it from a tea bag. I have no idea what they are smelling but Bisto smells as bad as it tastes and an Oxo cube is just a few minutes longer. Although I only make gravy from meat juices and crush a few cubes into cabbage water it doesn't take too much effort.

Just before I left, the problem ws that everything was being outsourced and offshored, so that it could be done as cheaply as possible.

So the offshore company would write the code as cheaply as possible, and couldn't care less if the system could recognise a post code without the spaces.

(Don't even get me started on people writing code that only recognised the US date format mm/dd/yyyy <(<(<()

All too often, when I raised a bug like the system refusing to accept valid postcodes without a space, the software developers would look at the specification, and would refuse to fix the bug unless the specification contained an explicit statement "..the system must be able to recognise post codes that are typed in without a space...".

Or they would fix the bug if we bunged them a bit more money.
