Has this "They don't know how lucky they have it" race to the bottom attitude actually ever worked to motivate anyone? Or has it just resulted in people leaving in droves, and the people who rely on the service suffering?
Look at buses, which once were on the same level as railways in terms of pay and conditions, and have been slowly ebbed away. Has anyone actually benefitted from more and more being squeezed out of staff, or conditions gradually ground down? Is the bus industry in a better way for it?
