If we have it, it's very likely Northern and Chiltern also have it.Only LNER TVMs have this functionality in my experience. Very convenient as well![]()

Northern do have NFC functionality for collecting tickets, and as do ticket offices when they print ToDs.If we have it, it's very likely Northern and Chiltern also have it.
Public Transport is to cater for the majority, the mainstream - and a substantial majority at that. However, it is not there to pander to individual tastes and hang ups. In much the same way as Telegrams, Public Call boxes, postal orders, cheques, trains to Yelvertoft & Stanford Park, cash on London buses etc have disappeared, even though, no doubt, there were some people using these facilities and some of those having concerns about using their replacements. The country has not ground to a standstill, and there haven't been widespread social problems as a result, even if it has upset some individuals.
Quite. People really should stop worrying about what other countries think of us for very minor things like having a solid banking system with good anti-fraud measures.
Are people still moaning you can't pay in cash on the buses in London any more? No. Onwards!
BACS bank transfer is simple enough and available to everyone with a bank account. PayPal also facilitates a very simple means of transferring money.Cheques haven't disappeared by any means; I receive cheques from time to time - and in most of those case there would be no easy way for me to be sent the payment other than a bunch of fivers in an envelope...
Using cheques to pay for items in a retail environment, rather than more niche business transactions. Very few cheques are written/issued now, compared to 30 years ago, and I daresay it won't be that long before their use is discontinuedCheques haven't disappeared by any means; I receive cheques from time to time - and in most of those case there would be no easy way for me to be sent the payment other than a bunch of fivers in an envelope...

BACS can be done in branch or over the phone at most (all?) high street banks.BACS requires paperwork and/or internet access (and requires knowing details of the recipient's bank account); for some people in some situations, putting a cheque in the post is the only easy option. (By the way, there are good reasons for not going near PayPal... which in any case requires on-line access.)

No it can't. BACS is only available to corporate customers nowadays and must be submitted online. But Faster Payments can be initiated over the phone or in branch, as well as online, from most if not all current accounts.BACS can be done in branch or over the phone at most (all?) high street banks.

And banking over the phone requires setting up security and so on, and knowing the bank details of the recipient.
"Swish" serves this purpose in Sweden. We do have PayM here which is a poorly-adopted system using mobile phone numbers. But...I remain surprised the banks didn't come up with a pronounceable "nonsense word" brand for Faster Payments so it would gain that usage, to be honest. I know it's an airline so that wouldn't have done specifically, but people I reckon would say something like "I'll Wizz that over to you".
I can't say I've ever heard anyone use "BACS" as a verb or anyone outside this forum use it as a generic term for bank transfer."BACS" is a common phrase used very widely to simply mean "bank transfer"
Yes, Ive also had issues at some places, it seems to be those mobile type ones like square and sumup that dont take it.Is it worth mentioning that away from the railways, in small businesses it's increasing common to see card readers that don't have a magstripe reader at all, and so can only handle chip or contactless payments?
AIUI the creation of faster payments was essentially forced on the banking industry by the regulators. Banks were quite happy to leave their customers with the choice of having their money sit in limbo for days during a BACs transfer or pay £25 or so a shot for CHAPs.I remain surprised the banks didn't come up with a pronounceable "nonsense word" brand for Faster Payments so it would gain that usage, to be honest.

A society I am in that is nothing to do with rail uses BACS to mean bank transfer - e.g. please BACS the Treasurer"Swish" serves this purpose in Sweden. We do have PayM here which is a poorly-adopted system using mobile phone numbers. But...

Regardless, I fear I've dragged the thread off topic enough![]()
Wow, that's greedy. I have a few bank accounts but immediate transfers (under various names) are in the range of 1 to 3 EUR.AIUI the creation of faster payments was essentially forced on the banking industry by the regulators.
