HST power cars are left running all night in Waverley (Haymarket end power car only) to prevent the batteries going flat as the power cars won't start in the morning otherwise.

It seems fuel was and is too cheap, so there is not enough incentive to design engines that can be turned off and on again without problems. The same on the road, many drivers leave engines idling for ten minutes while waiting for the swing bridge near me.
If you turn your engine off, you'll be losing your heating / air conditioning. Much the same as a train, really.

I remember an American railwayman telling me that in cold weather in the USA they usually keep locos ticking-over all night in case they can't start them in the morning.
Still the case on Iarnród Éireann's 201 class locos :D

Depends on if the system runs off an electric battery or not. Not all systems these days run directly off the petrol or diesel engine.

It’s often 60 but sometimes (more frequently recently) 50.
My car won’t automatically use the top gear at 60 and won’t use the top 2 at 50 so the rpm is generally higher meaning it’s not really saving much in terms of environment.
What are you driving, maybe a 7 or 8 speed automatic perhaps?

My Golf (6 speed DSG ) will cruise at 40 mph in 6th, (local 2 miles road-works, using the cruise) @ circa 1500 rpm.

What's an A6 please? I genuinely have no idea (other than the A road). Only asking in the spirit of the "forum abbreviation police" :D
