Named London station rather than London Terminals

Hi all

Probably a simple yes/no question for those more knowledgable than I...

Avanti have issued an Off-Peak return from Manchester to London as specfically Piccadilly to Euston rather than to London Terminals. It's a flexible ticket, any permitted route, any operator. Will it still be valid on the St Pancras via Sheffield routing or do I need to ask for a re-issue? (Or more likely refund and repurchase)

Thanks!

Off peak return at £94.50
Normally issued to 'London Terminals'.

Can anyone clarify which of these would be applicable for a journey from Manchester Piccadilly?

And without seeing the ticket, does it state 'London Euston' because it includes a seat reservation?

Is it an E-ticket, and if so which company did you buy it from and was it the app or website?

Here are two threads discussing cases of tickets which are normally issued to "London Terminals" instead having a named station when bought as an E-ticket:

I myself have bought E-tickets for London Terminals in the CrossCountry app and did not encounter this problem.

(I also note that Trainline and Avanti advertise their E-tickets using an image of a mobile phone showing an "Anytime Day Single" route "Any Permitted" from "London Euston" to "Manchester Piccadilly".)

It's Avanti, and it looks like the image on their website (only it's an OffPeak Day Return)

Original question remains though - can I use the return element of the ticket on the Permitted Route out of St Pancras via Sheffield?

It does include a seat reservation - impossible to buy a ticket from Avanti without one at the moment, even a fully flexible ticket. I've no intention of using the seat they've reserved me on the random service I had to select to purchase the ticket in the first place though! No idea if that's the issue - and if it is then surely that's poor from Avanti?

We would need to see exactly what the ticket shows. Could you attach a screenshot/picture (with the Aztec code and any identifying details anonymised)?

That looks to be wrongly issued to me; I would contact Avanti about that, as it should be issued from London Terminals. I'd tell them you want to travel from Sheffield and ask that they either confirm it is valid in writing or that they re-issue the ticket free of charge. (I doubt they will do either of these things but it'll be interesting to hear what they say).

Avanti's website is powered by a company that is notoriously bad.

A Network Railcard on a London to Manchester ticket? This is really good news! The rail industry has extended the Network Railcard area, without telling us!

/sarcasm.

Sorry, can you tell us what the price was (it should be on the back). There's potentially loads of mistakes on here.

There's no Railcard discount; I just habitually select the railcard so I don't forget it on journey's where it is valid... :)

It was £94.50.

Then it shouldn't mention the Railcard.

How on earth such sites get accredited is difficult to believe, but when a TOC is involved, the checking seems to be less stringent but that's another story!

With Avanti almost anything is possible! Sadly, it appears that no Network Card discount is actually applied.

And rightly so. If it becomes a habit to select it when booking then I won't forget on journeys where it is valid! :)

Thanks. So it's an SVR (Off-Peak Return) from Manchester Stations to London Terminals.

It should say on the front

RTN: LON - MCR (actually this bit might be correct as EUS - MAN - I'll have to refresh myself)

London Terminals
LON

Manchester Stations
MCR

Railcard
-

Valid until
(the date should not be cut in half)

I put the issues in bold (bold italic for the ones I need to check)

So between 6 and 8 issues.

Could you share the back as well please?

The ticket is, however, indisputably valid from London St Pancras to Sheffield, and then from Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly ... though you may encounter (unfairly) issues when using it.

There is no back on a digital ticket. But thanks for your confirmation on its validity.

Is this not just because there is no 3 letter station code for "London Terminals?" I bought my first ever e-ticket a few days ago, from trainsplit. Warrington Bank Quay to Blackpool North. The tickets I was given had the code for Warrington Central, not the WBQ I was expecting.

That depends on if/how you fold it ;)

There is; it's "LON".

Edit: see this thread

I think it should state 'WRG', but I'll message someone from Raileasy now and get this looked into...

That's as may be, but it's clear ticket retailers can give you a ticket with a different station code to where you're actually travelling from, which is rather confusing.

As an aside, I'll be using trainsplit again - their seat selector worked, while Avanti's didn't. E-tickets though, probably not. Lots of downsides to them frankly.

Isn’t the Avanti site the same as underlying tech as Chiltern (or have I got that wrong?)

I reported an issue to Chiltern a few months back as I purchased an e-ticket from Stevenage to London Terminals but it was issued specifically to Kings Cross. They assured me it had been fixed but reading this now I’m not so sure.

l’m less familiar with the Google Pay variety but there is a back on Apple ETickets - there are some dots in the top right to flip them over. The back includes the itinerary and other info.

No it’s the same as C2C - Pico4Uk. It’s hopeless.

Having given them a second request, Avanti have now replied to say (incorrectly) that even if they'd issued Manchester Stations to London Terminals it's not valid on the St Pancras via Luton, Leicester and Sheffield routing...

Manchester to Euston should be issued as follows for an ‘Any Permitted’ (bought on the TransPennine app):

And the back:

There should be a details button at the bottom of the screen.

Avanti’s app has always issued tickets to and from Euston instead of London Terminals - I often buy flexible Euston to MK tickets and it’s always said “EUS”.

Virgin were the same for the tickets I had, as are Caledonian Sleeper, from an examination of my Wallet. Some retailers do issue them from LON though.

That would be because Caledonian Sleeper tickets are issued to London Euston, and not to London Terminals. It should be the way the ticket data is set up, not who retailed it, that detetnines what is displayed. Avanti is just plain wrong.
