hi guys,
ive been given a off-peak return ticket from Alderley Edge to Southampton Central for next thursday thats telling me to travel through London. 3 questions with it:

1) do i have to go through Euston, the Underground and Waterloo, or could I change at Watford Junction, Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction (I dont particularly like going through the middle of london unless i have to)?
2) is there any peak time restrictions out of london i need to be aware of?
3) when returning, to i have to travel through Crewe, or can i change at Stockport or Manchester Piccadilly?

thanks in advance :)

I assume you ticket states route: +LONDON - is that correct?

Am I also correct in saying that the ticket cost £88:40/ £93:50 or £58:35/ £61:70 with a railcard?

Yes you should be able to go via Kensington Olympia.

If going via Euston as long as you arrive in Euston during the following times you are ok:

ARRIVE: LONDON EUSTON
Before 0720 or at or after
1129

Changing at Crew or Manchester; I can have a look tomorrow for you, but crew almost certainly as the not London fare (which is cheaper) would mean having to go through crew, I suspect. Going the other way you may only be allowed to change at Stockport, but as I say I can check tomorrow.

You will also be able to get a train to Birmingham New Street and change to a train to Southampton Central.

If your ticket is not as I have assumed above please clarify what the "route" bit says and the price as well as any railcard discounts.

If you are on the XX56 south from Crewe and want to avoid the London Transfer its best to change at Milton Keynes Central to Southern and then again at Clapham Junction to South West Trains with quite good connections it about 25 mins longer than via the theoretical underground timings. In practise you can usually beat the theoretical underground time by another 30 mins when travelling via Central London as the cross london transfers are very generous.

In times of disruption I'd recommend going via the underground as the Southern service to Milton Keynes seems to be one of the first to be cut short. Also be aware that the West London Line is no longer the suburban backwater it once was. The opening of the Westfield shopping complex at Sheppards Bush has changed all that and you are likely to experience crush loadings in the evening peak.

the tickets exactly what you thought it was, and its on a 16-25 railcard discount, costing £61.70.

and does

DEPART: LONDON WATERLOO
Between 0925 & 1630 (inc.) and
at or after 1822
apply out at Clapham Junction on trains which start at Waterloo?

Why not just use XC from Stockport direct to Southampton? (Unless you can't abide Voyagers, of course.)

AIUI your ticket is also good for the direct route, and there are no peak time restrictions at all, as it is a long enough XC route for the offpeak to be valid all day (after 0530 but effectively there's no restriction).

Very good point.

Don't know why I didn't think of that.

Not really directly relevant to the discussion, but won't the cheaper "NOT LONDON" ticket also be valid for the route via London Overground that avoids any London termini?

Should be, but as the OP has bought their ticket and the difference is only £3 + some pennies, with an admin fee of £10 it won't be worth it to seek a refund.

Alderley Edge - Southampton Central is valid via Manchester on trains that pass through Wilmslow, as I am not too familiar with trains up there I will just note that you are not allowed to pass through a station twice, so for example no getting a train to Manchester and then going to Birmingham via Wilmslow, but going via Macclesfield would be fine.

Going to Manchester or Stockport and getting a direct train to Southampton would (unless like me you won’t travel by Cross country) be the best Idea. There is also a direct bus from Euston to Waterloo if it’s avoiding the tube you were thinking about. Or change at Milton Keynes for a train to Clapham Junction and then straight down the SWML to Southampton to go the other way adding about 30 mins to the travel time via London.

But IIUC the advantage would be that the NOT LONDON SVR has (at least in NFM07) an 8X restriction:
NFM07 said:
Outward and Return journeys,
MONDAY to FRIDAY only.
No travel restrictions on
other days.

By any train except those
scheduled to depart before
0500.

If travelling via London
St Pancras please also check
restriction 7E & 9J.

This restriction is lifted all
day from Friday 24 December
2010 until Monday 03 January
2011 inclusive.
which means that there would be no need to worry about time restrictions into Euston and out of Waterloo (if you got off at Watford Junction and on at Clapham Junction respectively)?

Can it not be changed by doing an excess, rather than having to pay an admin fee?

Yes a change of route excess would cost £0.00, as you say you would then not be allowed to travel via any London terminal.

But if you were on a train arriving into Milton Keynes at or after 10:48 and or Euston at or after 11:29 then it wouldn’t matter on the way out, the return would be trains departing Kensington Olympia Between 0915 and 1514 and at or after 1812.

If traveling from outside the network area to inside the area (as in this case) travel would be unrestricted from London going out and also to London on the return, so the restrictions for Waterloo do not apply.

Why? Once the ticket becomes route NOT LONDON, the restriction becomes 8X. If the quotation in post #10 is accurate, that allows travel via Kensington by any train except those scheduled to depart before 0500.

Sorry I meant If the ticket was routed: "+London" then your quote of my post above would apply. As that is the ticket held by the OP at the moment that is what applies unless a change of route excess is done.

There is an easement allowing you to travel back through Cheadle Hulme twice, so you can change at Stockport. Travel is only permitted via Manchester if you travel via Heald Green to Manchester then back via Stockport. This would be a bit pointless as it is never quicker to travel via Manchester. You are not allowed to double back through Stockport.
