Until a couple of years ago, me and my sister didn’t realise that the main lyric in the chorus to “Missing” by Everything But The Girl was in fact “like the desert’s missed the rain”. Previously we thought it was “like a desert mystery”.

Fun fact: Parts of the music video for that song were shot outside Balham Tube station.

Yanks and their pronunciations, and accented syllables of whichever word ! (It would appear to me, that accent-on-the-syllable goes by no discernible rules, re one nation and another: just that we and the Americans put the accent on a randomly-different syllable from each other, as often as not.)

Going off-topic altogether from Mondegreens: the syllable-accenting thing -- there comes to mind, the not-noticeably-child-friendly schoolmistress in The Simpsons: whose name, in my infrequent exposures to said cartoon show, I for long mentally processed as being Miss (or maybe Mrs.) "Ker-BAIRBB-lle" -- I finally tumbled to realising that the word was "Crabapple": she being a bit of a sour individual -- as my brother used to say, "Giggle ! Giggle ! Laugh ! Laugh !" ; sorry, I'm a write-off where popular culture is concerned.

The thing with Bart's teacher is a bit of a "Keeping Up Appearances" thing- her name was Crabapple, fitting as she was somewhat sour, but she insisted it should be said "Cra-BOP-el"... much like Hyacinth "Bouquet".
