In the latter part of his life, the journalist, author and controversialist Malcolm Muggeridge, lived in Robertsbridge. He was born in Sanderstead, now in the London Borough of Croydon.

It appears that the village of Compton Verney was demolished in the 15th Century, and the main part of it became the manor house of the same name. The Verney family lived there for a long time, but adverse financial circumstances forced them to let the house from 1887 to various tenants. It was finally in 1921 to the Leeds soap magnate Josph Watson of Linton Spring near Wetherby in Yorkshire, who actually never lived in the house as he died in 1922 of a heart attack whilst hunting nearby with the Warwickshire Foxhounds. His eldest son and heir Miles Watson (1899–1968) became the last resident of the Manor, but only for a short while; he soon sold it and moved to Plumpton Place, a Grade II* listed Elizabethan manor house in Plumpton, Sussex.

Camilla Shand, later in life to become the Duchess of Cornwall, grew up in the former rectory at Plumpton.
She now lives with her husband at their country estate, Highgrove House, which is located at Doughton near Tetbury in Gloucestershire.

Westonbirt, with its famous Arboretum, lies also on the A433 road; a little way down it, from Doughton.

We learn that Thurrock's name comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "the bottom of a ship". By a bit of tortuous and rather dreadful wordplay, one could thus see an association with Keele, Staffordshire: which is also Anglo-Saxon, but nothing to do with ships (the place is, after all, way inland) -- it's derived from cy-hyll = "cow hill".

Various sections of prehistoric bank-and-ditch earthworks -- precise origin and purpose uncertain -- are found in assorted locations in the chalk uplands of southern England; and share the name of Grims Ditch or Grims Dyke. One such, is bisected by Tring town; there is another near Upton, Hampshire (some miles north of Andover).

In 2000, The Upton Clock Tower was built at the Upton Crossroads to celebrate the new Millennium and represent the town pride.
One of the town of Tredegar (in Blaenau Gwent)'s main attributes is the Town Clock, which dominates the southern part of the town centre. It was made by J B Joyce & Co. of Whitchurch, Shropshire and erected in the 1858. It was the idea of Mrs R P Davies, the wife of the Manager of the Tredegar Ironworks, who had decided that she wanted to present a "lofty illuminated clock", and decided that it would be erected in the Circle, Tredegar.

The "joint village"" of Farringdon, Hampshire -- a little way south of Alton -- comprises closely-neighbouring Lower, and Upper, Farringdon. Lower Farringdon lies, like Corhampton, on the A32 road.

Dockenfield is close to the Alice Holt Forest. Investigation would seem to show that there was never a lady called Alice Holt: most favoured explanation of the name involves its being a corruption of Aelfsige, Bishop of Winchester as at AD 984; his See had rights over the forest, and was responsible for its land on behalf of the king.

Sturminster Newton in Dorset also has a working watermill.

My favourite "go-to": Christchurch (Hampshire) also has a twin town in the French departement of Manche, in Normandy. S. N.'s "twin" is Montebourg; Christchurch's, St.-Lo.
