Pleasing to see one being saved.

Interesting to note the comment about it being thought in best condition of the remaining ones - I remember 524 was one of the last if not the last to receive a fully PRM compliant loo in summer of 2019 I think, so whether other works were done at the same time as this meaning it's the best of what's left I'm not sure.

365524 is to be saved!

If I was to choose one I'd look at one of the ones still around that served in Kent and shot past the EKR area, but preserving any one of them is better than preserving none at all, and I imagine the average visitor be won't be able to tell the difference.

I don’t understand what the EKR are going to be able to do with a 4-car A.C only EMU! Would have thought waiting for a 2-car 466 to be available. Good luck to them though, certainly an interesting development.

The EKR have taken the sensible option of the one in best condition rather than a less good one but with the “right” sticky digits.

Excellent news! A shame it won't be able to run on the mainline, but it's better than nothing. I wonder if it will be repainted into NSE?

So looks like the only 365s that will continue to exist are units 524 for static display, 525 for ETCS testing and a single carriage of unit 526. Very interesting to see it in numerical order.

There can’t be that much difference in condition between the ones which were running until last year.

Nene Valley Railway would have made a good home for one, being within sight of their former territory. Especially if it could be made a runner.

Arguably the EKR is within sight of former territory as well (albeit only 16 units went through Shepherdswell in their first 6-7 years), depending on where exactly the preserved unit will be parked. Doesn't mean though the NVR and others can't try and preserve one.

If they wanted to be really pedantic they could paint it into old Connex livery, as even though the unit to be moved to the EKR never had that livery, no 365 that operated in Kent ever wore NSE in passenger service IIRC.

What would you even run it with? Extend the AC down the Nene? :D o_O:p;)

I don’t want to get too excited, less this be another 315820…

but static preservation is a far more credible proposal - my hat off to Mr Johnston.

If you wanted to loco-haul it, you would have to purchase or convert an adapter wagon and a generator van to power the various systems including brakes, doors , heating and lighting. In fact, if you were looking at topping-and-tailing, you would need two adapter wagons. I'm afraid it's not really going to be a viable proposition for a heritage railway. The EKR have done their homework and come up with the best proposition.

You may be able to save a lot of that faff with converter vehicles etc with a few more mods to the ROG locos that drag them on their last journeys now, but it’s not really going to be worth the effort when you consider one of the most distinctive things with a 365/465/466 is the sound of the motors.

I would have thought it depends on the heritage railway. A relatively small railway like the EKR would certainly not have found any form of operation of the unit viable. But if it was somewhere like the Dartmouth Steam Railway or the Swanage Railway, from a length and/or revenue generating operation point of view, I would have thought viability of operation would be more achievable. However, there's also the matter of stabling a unit somewhere, and in the case of those two examples, among many others, they probably have no reason to want to have a unit that has never operated anywhere near their locations.

And no class 365 ever operated in Kent with a smiley face!

If anyone wants to create a thread in the History & Nostalgia or Trip Reports section that would be great :) feel free to link to any such thread from here for people to share their memories :)

It looks like all 365s from Doncaster will be heading to Newport. I don't understand why only a few were carted of to Rotherham.

Not necessarily. Just modify a diesel loco to work with it. I imagine a class 73/1 could be adapted with a different coupler and fittings at one end to multi to it and provide on board power.

I know someone who knows the new owner of 524. I'll see what I can find out about his intentions.

I'm pleased that one unit from the last batch of EMUs ever built at York (then under ABB) will survive in preservation.

Long line of 365s in Doncaster Down Yard today. En route Worksop to Ely, or vice versa?....or perhaps en route to Booths for razorblades? ☹️

They're a relative minority now, a large majority have already been scrapped. As this thread already describes…

Are they publicly visible? I’m still after 506 for sight which I think is there

As of this morning, only the unit at the North end of the line was potentially identifiable with binoculars....the remainder were hidden behind lines of freight wagons.
