It has happened before and it will happen again. Two years ago a woman did it in Southport, she was appropriately dressed as a clown at the time.

Absolute idiot and should be banned from driving. You use your eyes first and foremost, not blindly following what a satnav tells you to do.

Looking at the road layout on Multimap, it's probably that SatNav was telling her to turn after the level crossing so it sounds like another misinterpretation?

And finally.... don't you just love it how the paper presents it as a narrow escape from being mown down by a train when, with the crossing open to the road, there was no chance of that?

Yeah it does make you wonder, more people should be billed for stupid mistakes such as this, how much in total will it cost Network Rail for such a delay?

Im not sure on the 3rd rail but i remember a Top Gear when hammond was sat in a car that got electrocuted and was fine..

Wouldn't the car tires be elevated though? If the underside were caught on the rails? (The car would then not be grounded).

You don't need Sat Nav to do this.
It has been done many times before at crossings.
I seem to remember someone driving up the platform ramp off the crossing at East Boldon mid 90s.

Nothing, the car acts as a faraday cage.
If you touch something metal inside the car you might get a shock, or if you get out and touch the ground and the car at the same time you will get a shock if it's not earthed.

If you were to stand next to the car and touch it, you would, but the tyres would likely be on the ground anyway.

Appears to be a manually controlled crossing- correct me if I'm wrong, but the crossing signalman wouldn't be able to clear the signals protecting the crossing without shutting the gates, and he's not going to shut the gates whilst there's a car sat there? He doesn't even need to do anything to stop any trains hitting the car. Assuming it is a fail safe system.

My love, There have been whole countries torn apart due to people's small minded bigotry and racism. Generations and generations of Africans were captured and exported to North America to be used as slaves. Races of people were and still are very underprivileged simply because they were born with the wrong colour skin. Black people were lynched in the southern states of America purely because of the colour of their skin. The second World War was mainly due to one person's despotic views and idealistic outlook. 6 millions Jews were exterminated for being....well.....Jewish.
