Utter chaos reigning at Leeds last night.
It was bad enough that the 144 on the 16:00 Manchester Victoria > Leeds had a 'defective engine on the approach to Leeds' (sic) according to the guard. I reckon it had had a defective engine for a lot longer than that as it was 20 minutes late leaving Morley, a station with no information facilities for passengers whatsover, and a godforsaken hole to boot.
Anyway, got in with 1 minute to spare for the 17:56 Carlisle (should have been on the 17:36 Forster Sqaure). Ran like the clappers, but shouldn't have bothered because nothing was going out. Apparently something had failed at Saltaire, but as usual none of the staff seemed to know what was going on (including the poor sods whose job it was actually to take trains out in that direction), and customer service people were conspicuous by their absence. I eventually left on the [packed] '17:50' after half six, which I noticed at Saltaire was being billed as the 18:40 to Skipton and therefore not very late (the cheeky gits).
Does anyone know (1) what failed, and (2) why all the Bradford Forster Square workings were affected if the blockage was at Saltaire?
I got criticised by the wife for not having driven home, but a colleague told me that some cretin had crashed his car on Manningham Lane last night, and it took him an hour to drive from Bradford city centre to Shipley anyway. Hah!
