Hi all,

I have a First Anytime Return from Bristol to Glasgow next Wednesday (company paid ticket).

For personal reasons I actually need to travel to Ely on the return leg (Thursday). How close can I get on my existing ticket and what would I need to buy on top?

To complicate matters I then need to travel back from Ely or somewhere in the vicinity to Bristol on Sunday... happy to handle that part separately though!

Thanks in advance! I'm useless at working this out

Leicester or Nuneaton look like the nearest you can get on that ticket – then you'd need to buy Leicester to Ely, which is available direct on XC.

There's very little use you can make of your ticket to get from Ely back to Bristol if you want to go via London, that would basically be a new ticket. You could buy Ely to Birmingham and use the rump of your ticket from there, though I'm not sure that would be very fast.

Following on from the previous reply, I'm thinking that you simply break the journey at Leicester, provide yourself with (an) appropriate Leicester-Ely-Leicester ticket(s), and pick up your Bristol-bound journey at Leicester. That's assuming you have all the time in the world. Amazingly, there don't seem to be any engineering works on the Sunday to delay your journey...

That said, Leicester might be a bit of a detour. The ticket is valid from Queen Street so I would be inclined to use it to Doncaster, changing at Peterborough, or to Nottingham via Sheffield, continuing thence.
I would buy a cheap standard single, and an Advance on the Sunday, possibly via London.

Thanks all, it looks like Leicester is the best bet. I can find quite a reasonable itinerary, which might even be beatable with some quick connections.

Also, the journey back via Leicester (& Birmingham New Street) is barely any longer than via London on the Sunday, so I'm happy with that.

Excellent news.
Just check that you are not doing Glasgow-Nuneaton-Leicester which would involve doubling back on your Bristol ticket. If you are, then you need a Nuneaton-Ely ticket.
