There wouldn't be any signals if it was bring driven on sight (which is what the network is converting to) ;)

Believe it or not, it's not real! lol

It's a soap. They don't need to go into enough detail to ensure that the users of this forum are happy

I also doubt they care that you are scrutinising it :)

To be honest, it seems a lot of 'normals' didn't think a lot to it, judging by the discussion I heard on the radio on my way to work this morning. One listener described it as being more like a scene out of Thunderbirds!

As the line is a disused rail line, that formerly led in to Liverpool St station (now the Museum of Science and Industry) it doesn't have overhead wires.

The city centre section of the Metrolink (Deansgate-Castlefield to Victoria) is controlled by signals that show vertical, horizontal and slanted white lines, in some places these are attached to standard traffic lights. At Deansgate-Castlefield and Victoria stations there are signs informing drivers to switch to street running mode, which changes the horn to a quieter different pitched one that automatically sounds on moving off and presumably limits the speed significantly.

Perhaps we need to suspend our disbelief a little further and pretend the trams in Weatherfield are like those in the French city of Nice, and use on-board batteries at selected points where overhead wires would spoil the beauty of an area. Yes, I know Metrolink trams don't have this capacity but then they don't really travel over Coronation Street. :D

I don't watch Coronation Street, but I did see a picture of the "aftermath" of the crash on the BBC News website. I was surprised to see that the tram was in the new Metrolink livery. I'm quite surprised that Metrolink were happy for this to be done - as I'd have thought it was creating quite a negative impression! Any publicity in a national soap is good publicity I suppose - except if the person watching is one of those strange people who thinks soaps are real

Hmm.... a solution to electrifying the Forth Bridge and Severn Tunnel?

(sorry to drag this off-topic and discuss trains!)

That was the first thing that my partner (who knows less than nothing about railways) pointed out to me on Monday. She pointed out that the trams in Manchester run on wires and there were none on the tv screen so how was it running! She was most concerned as the accuracy or otherwise of this situation!

Now if only i can get her interested in the mighty Darlo..............................

What is this "Coronation Street" thing you speak of? Is it a televisual drama?

I've done some research into this 'Coronation Street' thing and apparently it's part of a punishment given out to those who are caught watching something called 'X Factor' or 'Emmerdale', more research is needed, but it is incredibly dangerous to step into the world of a soap addict, I best leave the rest to someone more highly trained than I.

Examination of the crash footage shows it was an older tram painted in the new livery. To be honest I'm rather shocked at how little can be achieved with £5m.

For those who have not seen it, but wish to without the horror of having to sit through a whole episode on ITVPlayer....

What you are failing to take account of is that the new tram line that goes through Wetherfield is being used for the trial of the new "extralocking" signalling system whereby, should there be a break in the track circuit (or a hint of potential disaster), not only do the signals go red but the OHL is whisked away on spring-loaded reels and the masts sink into the ground. (First designed for use on Channel Tunnel trains routed via Ayr at around the time of Mission Impossible) This reduces the risk of electrocution or meeting an obstruction. Unfortunately, what the designers of the system did not realise is that previous experience of lines passing through areas where filming might take place (eg in King Kong, or Batman Begins) a powerful vacuum is formed over any break in the line or associated works, so the affected train rushes on regardless of how often the driver thumps the brake button

Quite a few people who actually watch this drivel have told me they were very disappointed with the tram crash. One said the train coming noff the viaduct in 1967 was done better. But I know nothing of that!

Excellent! How long has Lloyd Bridges been in the programme? Will his appearances become fewer now he has passed on?

He's not important enough to be killed (or coming up to contract renegotiation time!)

I don't know how the system in Manchester works, but tram routes I know of (London and West Mids) don't have signals outside of points and single track sections; they are driven on line of sight (except of course where they run on-street).
