It really does look dire. If they're bothered about 'red white and blue" then just stick the double arrow in a white background and give it a blue border. Job done.

Interesting mock up doublearrow on Twitter just posted:

XP22? Interesting (if a little nostalgic) take on the Great British Railways brand provided by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (http://imeche.org) presumably using a GWR IET as a starting point…

Slightly off topic but this seems to be the place to discuss GBR at present. Interesting mock up doublearrow on Twitter just posted:

That’s a monstrosity created by taking an antiquated BR livery from the 20th century and slapping an unbearably clashing red NR sign on top.

Im a big fan of a return to blue and grey. The specific shade of blue was used as it hide brake dust and dirt more than other colours

And yet looks good with a bit of colour on it! Always liked the dark blue favoured by most European railways.

This would work better with just the red or just the gray.

A friend has just described the Union Jack double arrow symbol in the Daily Mail as a Brexit swastika which made me chuckle.

That's tragic.

I don't care much for the design myself but that's because it looks like an overloaded mess to me. Equating it to Brexit>Union Jack>Swastika, deliberately conflating the three things, is all too typical of a certain "right on" mindset these days.

I could see why honestly, it did make me feel slightly uneasy ( but I'm very much not a fan of any nationalism ) - but it would have made me cringe in the 80s too. I think part of the issue is the double arrow is so deliberately high-impact that it's a bit sharp for any additional design & comes out looking aggressive. Conflate high-impact ( "aggressive" ) design with a deliberate lean on the union jack, and well...

Seems my guess from when the name was first leaked wasn’t too far off

Do we have to go with an old BR livery? Can’t we have something new?

I’m not too fussed on specific colours, but I’d like there to be no yellow ends on new trains.

Looks like something someone knocked up in 5 mins for a slideshow presentation. Even the stuffy & pretentious British Airways liveries of the 80s managed more style...

The previous logo with the blue square & the attempt to turn your eyes inside out is in the original corporate identity manual dated from 1980, but it's the version for printed publicity. That one doesn't have regular areas of white either.
