Even ahead of the crash, I have noticed that the new opening sequence of Coronation Street has one of the new part-yellow trams in place of the grey one. This is appropriate as most trams on the Salford/ Eccles line are the new ones now!

I can confirm that; I hold one of the non commercial 30 day passes and that is indeed one of the conditions. It doesn't specifically state that as such, but there is quite a long list of exclusions and a proviso about nothing which would harm their image.

Which seems very reasonable to me.

If EE wanted to do something like that, they would have to either refer to it off scene or create a full scale mock up in a studio, and I suspect that the latter course of action might pretty quickly result in "an interesting reaction" from 55 Broadway...

Indeed, given they're currently very cooperative and provide new U/G posters to be used at Walford East.

Just watched it and it was ssssssooooooo fake
it was a old tram (T68) in the new livery wich none have been painted into yet
the cab was a new M5000
a tram could stop in that distance
the T68's number 1001-1026 and it had the number 1030
and a driver wouldnt just sit there as he drives of the bridge

The Tram was real - Metrolink vinyled one up for them. The trams in Corrie are run by PolitanLink (a very bad pun)

Though the crash itself was hilarious - tech may have moved on from the Emmerdale plane crash's flaming things on fishing rods bouncing through the air but the Physics and CGI were awful

I was in stitches after watching it. Have they actually done a news report for News at 10.

that s hilarious... it didnt slow down under emergency braking at all...

Depends what speed it was doing, I'm not familiar with the Metrolink at all but it takes time to stop from any speed still interesting how they did it though.

They don't take that long (they're designed to stop v quick compared to heavy rail stock). They stop alot quicker than that and don't go *that* fast.

The actual crash with the carriage swinging high in the air was done with CGI while, as we know, full scale mock ups were used for the wreckage scenes.

Apparently the logistics of filming meant that the whole set at the crash location had to be demolished and rebuilt twice during the filming, which cost around £5 million in all for the entire week's episodes - not sure if this figure includes Thursday's live episode, but I think it does.

That tram must be built like a tank......

Just what I was thinking! If anything, this incident will have improved the reputation of the trams because they don't appear to have crumpled an inch :D

Were the carriages used on set really mocked up? The fact they weren't at all damaged suggests Metrolink leant them and that they've just been delicately placed on set.

Plus I would like to add on that by saying the following:

How in the hell could Barlow see up that high and know that was coming, give the man some carrots(!)
That second carriage would not have snapped up and then slammed back down like that

In slow motion too, like a giant shoe about to slam down and squash a bug...

I have to admit the effects were quite good, but CGI is like that (and by doing it in the dark, they can get away with more inaccuracies when rendering) and you still have to take care to make something look believable before you get the computers going.

It was totally OTT and more like some sort of spoof B-movie horror film, at least from the clips I saw on YouTube (I didn't actually watch the broadcast).

Still, I am sure the typical soap fan thought it was great and totally realistic.

It's no different to the OTT and totally unrealistic stuff that happens in all soaps, or Casualty (although the last time I saw Casualty, it seems they'd given up on having any big accidents and just turned that into a soap).

All dross, in my opinion - but, fair enough, other people do enjoy them so I simply opt not to watch!

The last time I watched Coronation Street, Gail was still a virgin...
Give me Anna Friel and that Brookside lesbian kiss any day.
That was called car crash TV at the time by the media, no? ;)

I travel on Metrolink a lot and as a result ive been on a tram making a Emergancy Stop a few times and they can go from there top speed (50MPH) to zero incredibly quick 5 Seconds Most

i normally lurk about this forum reading, but i feel i must comment on seeing this:

1) i work in the film/TV business.
2) i just wasted nearly 3 minutes of my life watching that.
3) if they spent £5m on that, I'd be extremely surprised. Accountants in our business can be creative like the rest of us....

There was a brilliant bit of TV produced in Australia in the early 90s - Police Rescue. Series 2 - Episode 2 - Level Crossing Accident & the aftermath (episode 1 quest starred a young Russell Crowe!). Quite realistic considering its low budget. The State Rail Authority let them use a couple of 600/700 class Railmotors for the impact & crash scene. The crash scene was "built" by dropping a couple of the carriages using a crane.

Interesting how quickly they can get wreckage shifted in Weatherfield isn't it?

The crash happened late night in the storyline and yet by mid morning the next day they had a crane and sling arrangement lifting the carriages away...

Well I dont watch Corrie, but I saw the crash while I was visiting my daughter, 'what a crock'. The tram was so a mock up, I have seen and been involved in dealing with a real train crash, this was just a 'cheap' attempt to increase ratings for a 'soap opera'.

They say that about 20 million watched it, well that means over 40 million could care less, including ME. If metrolink agreed for their image to be tarnished in this way, then we need someone new to run it.

Its all CGI and some vehicle shots in the depot for texturing. If you look they forgot to draw in OHLE!
