This is a great looking tour, with top and tail class 40's which must be quite rare these days. It's also a great way to travel behind LSL Class 40's without having to deal with some of their more anti-customer booking policies as bookings are through the Branchline society. This tour covers some obscure bits of track and I'm particularly looking forward to the sound of class 40's pulling out of the Lime Street cuttings :)

The Branch Line Society is delighted to announce The Wirral Squirrel, a charity railtour operated by Locomotive Services Limited and featuring two Class 40s (D213 and D345) operating in top 'n tail mode throughout. Our coaching stock will be the wonderfully restored Saphos set with all First Class seating.

Our route and provisional timings are as shown below. Please note that all times and routing are indicative until confirmed by Network Rail. Final routing and timings are usually confirmed by Network Rail five days before travel and will be enclosed with your e-ticket.

Crewe P12 (PU 10.30) - Liverpool Lime Street P10 (PU 11.30 / RM) - Runcorn - Halton Chord (Frodsham Single) - Helsby - Ellesmere Port - Hooton - Rock Ferry P2 (RM) - Chester Curve - Croes Newydd Up Goods Loop (RM) - Bidston (RM) - Croes Newydd Up Goods Loop (RM) - Chester Dn & Up Main - Helsby - Warrington Bank Quay - Earlestown P4 - Lowton Jn - Ince Moss Chord - St Helens Central - Olive Mount Jn - Olive Mount Chord - Bootle Jn - Hall Road Wallside Siding (RM) - Bootle Jn - Bootle Branch Jn - Liverpool Lime Street (SD 19.45 / RM) - Crewe P12 (SD 20.45).

The special train will be raising funds for James' Place (a charity that ensures help is available for every man facing a suicidal crisis) and our friends from Railway Children. There will be a charity raffle with a range of fantastic prizes.

Seating will be allocated in line with the latest Government guidelines and our Travel Safe procedures. Where possible, families and groups should make a single booking for their entire party. Please rest assured we are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment on board, whilst adhering to all Public Health regulations. Our team will be following an enhanced programme of cleaning for your safety.

A Buffet Car will be available throughout the journey offering a wide range of drinks, snacks and light refreshments. We hope to have a number of real ales available to enjoy.

Subject to the necessary resources, it may be possible to offer a First Class Dining option. Please add a note to your booking if you would be interested in upgrading to dining should we be able to offer this.

As part of our Travel Safe procedures, part fares and pay on the day fares will NOT be available.

We are extremely grateful to Merseyrail and GBRf for all their assistance with this project.

This looks amazing. I see both of the 40s are doing a tour down my way later in the year, but as always the tour starts miles away!

I know, I can imagine your frustration with most tours visiting your area rather than starting from there. I usually have to do a couple of hours driving to get on most tours too- I just have to pick the ones that are worth it! :)

Yeah it is a bit like that, quite a few years ago a few us did a tour with a pair of 50s from Cardiff to York which we picked up at Bristol Parkway which was fine and before that we did D1015 from Westbury to Newquay and Fowey. But it’s always a bit surreal waving at your house as you sail past it twice in one day.

It does look very good but at £159 a little steep for my pocket! I appreciate it's all first class seating with very desirable traction so hard to complain too much to be fair still though £100 is more my usual upper limit for a railtour

Also worth noting that you do have to be a member of the BLS but at £12 per year it's more than worth it as that also gets you 24 issues of Branchline News which is an excellent publication (free sample can be found here).

They do sound good tours. Yeah, I know what you mean about passing your house, it's especially frustrating on the way back to the tour starting point :D

I sympathise with the pricing, but it seems to be the way things are going. More and more tours seem to be first class only too. As you said the traction is good and there are some difficult bits of track to cover, so it's up to each individual to decide whether it's worth the price!

The Branchline News is indeed excellent :)

Likewise for me

Although as the timings for me will mean a hotel on the Saturday night (at least a 10;30 start gives more options as you can stay elsewhere if it's cheaper) plus a hotel somewhere on the Sunday night (and using up a day of annual leave for the Monday).

So sadly where part of me wants to do the tour, I can't justify the total cost.

I'm in the same place with many tours, so I've just started driving there and back the same day for most of them or maybe staying one night rather than two at a push to keep the costs reasonable. Driving there and back the same day saves money on beer too, although it does make them long days. Pre-pandemic there were a few tours picking up in the South Yorkshire area, so hopefully now we're returning to normality a few more future tours might do too.

Makes sense, especially if you don't mind long distance driving.

I just need to watch my remaining annual leave as I have no idea how many days I will need for Christmas time

With less than 200 seats (probably) as it features some length restricted locations, 2 preserved locos and the charity factor this isn't as bad as it sounds. If a commercial tour organiser managed to get a similar train the charges to them would probably be higher too and subsequently passed on to the passengers. I went on a similar train in standard class mk1s with 47s at the end of 2019. Worked out over £100 for standard class incl BLS membership that I had otherwise nil interest in and covered previously home territory and lines that use to cost very little to use on bland surburban EMUs. But doing the hardest bits of the Northern lines, with a few sidings and a depot thrown in, on a tiny fun sized private train with a fave class of loco came a premium cost so I gritted my teeth but still booked within hours of the announcement despite my finances not liking it, but just about being able to scrape it together. Appreciate not everyone will feel the same so booking remains optional. I won't be wasting my money on 40s for that trip but I was interested to hear it was running.

I think this will be the first mainline BLS tour of the year that I won't do! Bit too much for me considering the unrateable traction. The track isn't especially interesting either if I'm honest.

Is the problem here that the 40 bashers aren't bothered about faffing about in sidings and loops while the yellow pen crowd aren't fussed about the 40s?

Is there enough yellow pen activity on this trip for devotees of the BLS. There do seem to be a lot of trips in the Crewe / Liverpool area. This one needs to appeal to those who have possibly not done the earlier trips and want the novelty of class 40s.

Not really sure why they are using 2x 40 on a trip utilising Mk3 stock. Just as well use ETH 47s really. Just a mind boggling combination in my opinion. Now a pair of 40s on Mk1's would get my money for sure.

This is a (mainly) mark 1 set.

LSL market the Mark 1s under the Saphos brand and their Mark 3s under the Intercity brand. It is the Saphos set of coaches which are being used, not Mark 3s. That is quite clear.

Indeed and I certainly don't wish to give the impression that I'm somehow "disgusted!" or similar at the tour and it's cost. I'm a big fan of BLS tours (and the BLS) and I'm sure those that travel will have an excellent day.

They just have slightly deeper pockets than I  ;)

I am a fairly new member of the BLS, joining after a Merseyrail railtour in 2016.

That 2016 tour actually marked my return to network rail travel for the first time in many years as I had virtually given up on network rail travel after passing my driving test. I am sure my last significant journey was a long time before the final demise of British Rail. My only regular rail trips being in the heritage sector and the odd former GWR branch line in the west country.

I really enjoyed that BLS Merseyrail railtour and did two subsequent ones, also a couple of Blackpool Tramway tours plus some AGM visits when the AGM was on Merseyside.

My impression of BLS events is very positive, well organised, and enjoyable. Hence when I received notification of the Wirral Squirrel it appeared too good an option to miss.

Not bothered about the motive power nor the route.

Convenient day out without travelling miles to access it and with travel in more spacious first class carriages.

That was basically my motivation for booking it.

Not sure what you mean by a yellow pen - though - I have not got one!

Yes, indeed.

I was using the terminology adopted by the previous poster - I think they were suggesting that yellow pen = highlighter.

I see no - don't bother with highlighter pens! Just make a note of where I have been with a normal pen. :D

Does anyone know if this railtour is still going ahead this weekend as planned?

I'm booked to be on it but have yet to receive a ticket / confirmed timings. Also there is no schedule available in real time trains yet. I've emailed BLS but had no response yet.

Thx

Care to elaborate rather than being cryptic?
The tour does not do any of the Northern Merseyrail lines (Hall Road)
It's now a 40 and a 47 despite both 40s being available.
It misses the Ince Moss Line.
Oh and to add to the misery it's been declared a 'dry' train so you can't even drown your sorrows.
All for the bargain price of £159!

The second 40 is available but not in the right place therefore effectively not available.
They have two days to get it from Bury to Crewe which is not difficult unless of course 'someone' is making it difficult...........
