I use Caps Lock rather than Shift because I learned to type on a typewriter that was my Dad's.
On manual typewriters, didn't there use to be "Shift", and "Shift Lock" keys? -- or is memory playing me false?

Don't know about typewriters but the BBC micro definitely had one.On manual typewriters, didn't there use to be "Shift", and "Shift Lock" keys? -- or is memory playing me false?
I'm an ex bus driver, don't get me started - it's supposed to be a light-hearted thread![]()
If you are writing COBOL, especially if you are writing it angrily. What is the point of the Caps Lock key on keyboards? I always disable mine, as it's just a nuisance.
What is so wrong with supercalc?I would ban Excel, so that we had to go back to Lotus 123

That reminds me that l've no key for the euro symbol on either of my keyboards, though it's one that I would use often. After years of using them regularly, I can still remember the ASCII codes for the peseta and guilder symbols, for example (ALT +158 and 159) even though I have hardly needed either for years. Does anyone know what the ASCII code for the euro symbol is? I still find it comes easier to do symbols this way, no doubt because I was a confirmed WordPerfect 5.1 user for decades.I don’t use it often, but it does prove useful occasionally, such as when sending instructions to solicitors. I have never used the yen sign, but I put up with it: unless you have a bespoke keyboard, you are going to have keys you rarely, if ever, use. And then what do you do when you have to use another keyboard..?
There is, i in fact bought an old typewriter this week (Brother Deluxe 600) which has a dodgy shift lock.On manual typewriters, didn't there use to be "Shift", and "Shift Lock" keys? -- or is memory playing me false?
Alt+0128, or Ctrl+Alt+E in Microsoft Word.Does anyone know what the ASCII code for the euro symbol is? I still find it comes easier to do symbols this way, no doubt because I was a confirmed WordPerfect 5.1 user for decades.
That only works if they know which way you're facing. That might be possible on a phone with a built-in compass, but otherwise there's no way of knowing whether you start off facing toward or away from your destination.
If they know you're leaving a station, yeah, that's doable.I am almost always standing at the exit of a station, facing forwards!![]()
On Windows with a UK keyboard the easiest way to get a € character is with Alt Gr 4 (where Alt Gr is the Alt key to the right of the space bar)Alt+0128, or Ctrl+Alt+E in Microsoft Word.
Just tried that and it works on Mint as well. Can't speak for other Linuxes but I can't imagine it being massively differentOn Windows with a UK keyboard the easiest way to get a € character is with Alt Gr 4 (where Alt Gr is the Alt key to the right of the space bar)
This would be very helpful if I used a UK-layout keyboardOn Windows with a UK keyboard the easiest way to get a € character is with Alt Gr 4 (where Alt Gr is the Alt key to the right of the space bar)
It'd want to work, considering that that's been the standard position for the € symbol on UK-layout Windows keyboards for quite a while now!Just tried that and it works on Mint as well. Can't speak for other Linuxes but I can't imagine it being massively different

Aren't the fourth and twelfth items basically the same?More things I would ban:
- Barkie, yappee dogs left out in the garden, especially in the evening/at night. If you have a dog, you should train it properly.
- Extending dog-leads.
- Strimmers of any type. (Get a scythe.)
- Any sort of "music" being audible from outside a car or house to anyone 1 metre away (or more).
- Those stupid aftermarket exhaust pipes which make it sound like the exhaust is blowing.
- Fireworks
- Noisy parties
- AirBNB, holiday lets (unless on a farm and owned by the farmer) and second homes
- Leaf-hating neighbours who expect their driveway to be as spotless as the indoor carpets
- Removing hedges and trees so make a driveway with an impermeable surface (then moaning about the lack of bees)
- Leaf-blowers (I mean, why????)
- People who inflict their "music" on others
Alternatively, we could divide society up into "noisy" and "quiet" and the noisy ones can all live together in the noisy places and leave the quiet people in peace!
TPO.
I would ban radio stations from playing Christmas music until at least December 1st.
I have just heard an instrumental version of the extremely irritating Christmas Song (the one that starts with "..chestnuts roasting on an open fire..") on an internet radio station that I listen to.
It is only September 12th for ***** sake.![]()

That line of the song always makes me think of the tale of the chess convention, many participants in which are staying in the same hotel. One evening, a bunch of them are chatting in the hotel lobby, trying to one-up each other with tales of clever chess ploys which they've carried out. The hotel manager, plainly annoyed, breaks the gathering up and shoos them off to their rooms; explaining, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer".
That should be in the ForumBadJokes thread.![]()
Car drivers that can't negotiate mini roundabouts correctly (no, if you're in a car, you don't drive straight over it or cut across the wrong side)

Amen ! (except that I lack the necessary skill to disable the thing). When what you're typing needs an "a", you can so eASILY ACCIDENTALLY TOUCH SAID KEY, AND THIS HAPPENS, AND IT DRIVES YOU MAD.
I do be agreeing with you...Adobe.
I hate that company.
I do be agreeing with you...
Or should I say a-do-be agreeing with you.(Not funny I know)
