Strange Desination Board on an Class 323?

I posted a link to video a while back with a SWT (I think) 158 with Inverness as it's 'destination'.

Are you sure it wasn't actually on an Inverness service, with Scotrail?

When the 319s first entered service they had Kettering on the destination blinds. Very clever considering Kettering is 20 miles from the nearest electrification.

Best one I ever saw was not on a train but at a station.

One of the screens at Fenchurch Street was reading " Welcome to Nuneaton" a couple of years ago. Had to do a "triple take" to make sure I'd read it right! Just a shame I didn't have a camera on me to take a photo of it!

I used to stick "Ironbridge" up on the 158's I used to drive for ATW regardless of the fact there has not been a station open down there since the 1960's. I presume this was done as we were still running specials down to the power station up to about 1990.

BTW I must find out how to alter Voyager displays now! They don't tell you that in training as it's the TM's issue not ours.

The old Cl317 blinds had Spalding on them. That's one hell of a run-up at Peterborough.

While this isn't exactly the same as we've been talking about, I was told once by a member of another forum (New Railway Modellers - check it out) that once at Glasgow Queen Street, they witnessed the departure board advertising a service to 'Nowhere'.

The Voyager one has had me laughing ever since I saw it the other day - tis great.

Not quite the same, and was just a fluke, but I was at Banbury about 18 months or so ago and was waiting for the Chiltern to Birmingham. It was a little delayed and had an expected time.

The expected time came, and in pulls a freight train, stopping in the station! I tried to get a picture of this new mode of "Chiltern" transport(!) but unfortunately, due to the way the PIS boards (LED ones) refresh, the camera just got a load of orange lines

Sadly you can't input your own text on our 165s and 168s but we do sometimes put up Quainton Road or Wrexham General when working ECS. You can make it say Happy Christmas too.

Have seen that a few times where freight trains arrive when the announcement has been for a passenger service!

Definitely looks like Paddington to me, it will be from when XC ran services in to Paddington. The trainshed roof and support pillars look nothing like that at Euston, which is nowhere near as ornate.


I often put Teeside Airport or Shaw on the display if possible.

There used to be Manchester to paddington via Oxford services. It was an extension of the manchester - reading service, which is now diverted to newcastle.

Even after VTXC pulled out of running service trains to Paddington, I think they still ran a few ECS moves from Reading to Old Oak Common via Paddington, and vice versa. These all run to Eastleigh now.

You can actually put desired text into these units, you've just got to know how to do it!

Not many of the Northern ones have the LEDs, more the flipdot things. Guessing that unit was cascaded from somewhere where they were modified.

Couple on the 158s I've seen include Mystery excursion and Ramblers Excursion.

Of course I bet there are a few that show random stations where trains don't normally terminate, but is always handy for engineering work where the trains do terminate. Have to say that I've never seen any of the funny ones on a Voyager, but then again the screens on Voyagers always seem to be broken anyway...

158758 had it fitted as a trial quite a few years ago. The other end of the unit has the conventional 158 indicator. 158758 is one of the former FNW blue star units and has been in the north west since the mid to late 90s.
