Tuesday 08/08/72 All Line Rover Day 6
The plan for today was to try to visit Toton, home of the elusive D1 – D10 “Peak” locos (later class 44).
DMU Reading – Birmingham New Street
150 (46013) 11:25 Birmingham New Street – Derby
DMU Derby – Long Eaton
Bus Long Eaton – somewhere near Toton depot
We managed to get around Toton depot, copping Peaks 5,6,7,8 and 10 in the process. At Derby there was the usual eclectic mix of locos on the Research Centre, including the APT-E, prototype HST power cars 41001/2, baby Deltic 5901, Wickham railbus DB999507 (since preserved), and Park Royal twins DB975089/90. On the way home via Birmingham, the depot at Burton was a challenge to the spotter, as it was wedged full of class 20s.
114 (45066) 1719 Derby – Birmingham New Street
DMU Birmingham New Street – Reading
Wednesday 08/08/73 (2nd All Line Rover Day 1)
A year later, I was off on an All Line Rover again, by myself this time.
1945 (47715) 0811 Tilehurst – Paddington
50 (45040) 1025 St Pancras – Sheffield
155 (46018) 1600 Sheffield – St Pancras
1606 (47635) 1945 Paddington – Reading
Again with an emphasis on spotting, I arranged the start date of my All Line Rover to coincide with an organised visit to Tinsley depot, where (amongst many other things) I successfully saw all three of the class 13 master+slave shunters.
Wednesday 08/08/79
86237 0011 Crewe – Stockport
40075 0050 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn
Then after a few hours at home, it was time to return to my bedsit in Manchester and my summer job there:
46055 1347 York – Manchester Victoria
40117 1540 Manchester Victoria – Abergele & Pensarn
40195 1749 Abergele & Pensarn – Chester
40136 1933 Chester – Crewe
87025 2020 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
I always regarded the split-box 40s as particularly rare, especially as – with the exception of 40142 – they were all non-boilered. 40136 was required – hence my decision to alight from 40195 at Chester and prolong my journey home by having 40136 to Crewe.
Saturday 08/08/81
Having alighted at Peterborough off the 2300 Kings Cross – Bradford with 40056, I was delighted to drop onto another 40 working pretty much immediately on the balancing working from Bradford:
40025 0045 Peterborough – Kings Cross
I fell into a deep sleep, only waking up as the ECS left Kings Cross on its way out to Bounds Green Carriage Sidings:
31405 03xx Kings Cross – Bounds Green
EMU Hornsey – Kings Cross
I made it back just in time for 40025’s next work:
40025 0405 Kings Cross – Doncaster
DMU Doncaster – Sheffield
47478 1137 Sheffield – Birmingham New Street
86214 1318 Birmingham New Street – Euston
… and back onto a late shift …
Monday 08/08/83
There were some strange locos out on the Scarborough – Liverpool circuit, so I went for a little dabble after work, pausing only for refreshment at Stalybridge:
45135 1710 York – Stalybridge
47285 1916 Stalybridge – St Helens Jn
40099 2006 St Helens Jn – Liverpool Lime Street
40192 2040 Liverpool Lime Street - York
On the same trains as
@NorthWestRover once again
Thursday 08/08/85
47710 0717 Stirling – Edinburgh
47714 0830 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street
37049 0950 Glasgow Queen Street – Arrochar & Tarbet
37012 1115 Arrochar & Tarbet – Glasgow Queen Street
87014 1305 Glasgow Central – Carlisle
86426 1524 Carlisle – Carstairs
I had hoped for something exotic working on one of the Carstairs portions, but not today, so I headed for home:
87017 1904 Carstairs – Glasgow Central
This was the through service to Ayr, but it terminated at Glasgow Central due to the Guards’ strike. This train didn’t normally call at Carstairs, but did so because the train from Penzance – which normally split at Carstairs – was running “full circuit” to Aberdeen, so the Euston service called additionally at Carstairs and Motherwell for passengers off the Penzance train.
Saturday 08/08/87
86402 0055 Crewe – Glasgow Central
Sunday 08/08/93
87002 0137 Glasgow Central – Preston
I alighted (very sleepily) from my sleeper at Preston, then set about walking / hitching a lift to Carnforth, which I succeeded in doing in plenty of time to make:
48151 1030 Carnforth – Barrow in Furness
48151 1155 Barrow in Furness – Carnforth
153 359 + 153 330 Carnforth to Lancaster
43013 + 43079 1426 Lancaster – Preston
47490 1515 Preston – Crewe
86244 1614 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
43063 + 43067 1734 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Parkway
43008 + 43190 1900 Bristol Parkway – Reading
