Pleased to see that this is going ahead and Nottingham is getting investment. Though, I'm a little concerned that it appears that the long overdue work on resignalling won't be done until 2014.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-11465495

The resignalling and platform remodelling had already been deferred, the most recent CP4 enhancements plan has it down for 'summer 2013'. It was originally Christmas 2011 and then Christmas 2012.

(Another example of making sure you read the latest CP4 plan version - there are 5 that I've seen...)

I think Nottingham is a really beautiful station, so aside from the concourse being re-done, car parking improved and disused buildings better used, is that all that is being done under this (I know the remodeling etc is separate)?

So why is it going to take them so long to get the work started and done?

Nottingham deserves the investment and work now instead of waiting, I do hope though in this whole plan they don't get rid of the beautifully built main front to the station.

I would be very surprised if the main station building isn't grade 1 listed,
They're putting some shops in place of existing taxi rank & cycle racks,
but apart from that the frontage remains the same, full details at:
http://www.thebigwheel.org.uk/for-b.../trains-and-the-hub/the-hub/the-hub-proposals

Aha!
Thank you for the link that's really cool, sounds good! Anyone know when or if the designs will be publicly released? I would like to see the plans of the station design!

hi i know it also accomponies a platform 7.......this is curious for a few reasons:
1. No new services are being introduced.......
but more especially:
2. They arent even planning to use it for existing services? Most of which are "crammed" onto platforms 3 and 5 whereas others (such as 1) have only a train an hour in the off peak.
If this is the case and this is what ive heard....then what is the point of the extra platform????? Even if there wont be any services yet (ie if its reserved for future services), they surely might as well at least use it for existing services to "spread them out" better across the platforms.....otherwise it will look rather silly while platform 5 is crammed and platform 7 is empty all day!!

Sometimes it is more than 'oh, that platform is empty, but this one is full. Why?'. Although straightforward at the East end, the West side of the station is fairly complex, so platforms like 1,4 & 6 are less used to avoid conflicting moves (i.e. blocking other routes) at the West side :D

If I understood the spec correctly, they aren't buildng a platform 7 theyre embedding passive provision for it, ie leaving the space as car-park etc with no permanent buildings. midful that there will likely be demand for it in future

It must be really confusing for normals, as Platform 5 gets really intensive use

xx26 Worksop very west end
xx 37 Birmingham middle
xx45 Liverpool east end, but there is often a 2 carriage 158 waiting before that

If you go into Nottingham station booking office, there is a scale model of the proposed station redevelopment, and I have to say it looks stunning, and not before time to!

Getting rid of the taxi rank at the front and putting a better and bigger area for passengers will improve the station no end, it really really needs it! It would just about cope but since the coffee shop has been there, with all its tables and chairs outside, it has been a real nightmare in there at busy times.

The sooner its done the better!

They are providing extra west facing flexibility by building out part of platform 4, AFAICT from the CP 4 enhancement plan. (I think that's what they mean by a 'wing platform' - probably building out the eastern half of P4?

The scheme will split the existing platform 4 to create a wing platform and a 6-car bay platform. It will also allow operations from the west to use existing platform 6. Passive provision will [also] be made for a new platform.

Does anyone know if they will be keeping the platform awnings? They mention re-glazing on the website but it doesn't mention whether they will be re-built.

I found this image on a different forum (something to do with skyscrapers?.)

If this is what the station is going to look like.. it's quite impressive!

I do hope that they make it possible for a tram bridge to be built over it if they decide to extend NET

I don't see why they can't as far as I can remember there's dead space over the station and for a while to the P6 side, where it can then rejoin the road.

I could have a go, its in a glass case so not sure how clear it will be, and will more than likely be off my mobile, but ill have a go.

I have got the official leaflet in front of me now, says a final completion date of November 2014 and the website can be found here http://www.thebigwheel.org.uk/for-business/commuter-travel/trains-and-the-hub/the-hub

Cheers for that, from the picture it looks as though the canopies will be retained. Like the tram bridge as well. Just like the good old days with the GCR :D

Yes, but that might need quite a lot of work for supports or whatever, but if they do the upgrade so it can be easily done, that would be great :D

The way it looks like they are doing it seems as if it's on a bridge(?) for a bit over the road, where is it going to continue onto? or does it stop there?

Well from that bridge it would probably head to Clifton but how I don't know, as currently, on that side of the station is building!

Maybe it does go down into the road then they just didn't bother to draw that far along.

Sorry, I haven't explained it very well. Right now, on the picture, where the buses are on the left is where the current road is I think, and where the bridge ends is a building!

Well this isn't making sense, I thought there were a couple of open spaces, either side of the road where it could safely come down - Google maps to rescue, I've looked at there is a car park but then there are offices by the looks of it. So This is baffling me unless it's elevated for a majority of the city.

Hi,
I decided to go past the station in Nottingham to see where everything would fit. It's all quite simple in the end:

The tram follows the line of the GCR across Nottingham station and then crosses Queens Road on a bridge. This is shown in one of the images on "The Hub" gallery.
(I'd imagine that if the GCR bridge buttresses were left in the station that little work would be needed to re-use them. A tram has got to weigh a lot less than the heavy rail services that ran on the GCR!)

This allignment is clear of new office blocks (apart from a small structure within the station complex that's scheduled for demolition with the works anyway). At the moment there are a few advert hoardings and two old single story mini warehouses/workshops in the way. These could easily and cost-effectively be removed.
If you look on Multimap/Bing/GoogleMaps you can see the advert hoardings and the empty spaces curently used as a car park.

I don't know if this bit is elevated or if the tracks come down to street level. There are no engineering issues - just cost and traffic management.

The tracks cross Crocus Street and Arkwright Street at thier junction and then curve away to the allignment of Meadow Street. There's a handy bit of disused road in the park that shows the allignment. I am sure the tram would then run at street level.

Hope this helps visualise where it will all fit,
Jason

If this goes ahead as it is planned it'll be amongst some of the best stations in Britain, passing even the standard of Sheffield station.

Where is the land that'll be released for mixed use? The old Low Level station??
