Nice, good to see one vehicle will have a new purpose. :)

That'll keep the 332 preservationists happy won't it?

Did the NRM claim one or not? I would have thought that as the first privatisation purchase, they have an important story to tell, quite apart from the Rail/Air story which is important in its own right.

They aren't particularly interesting units compared to other stuff the NRM has. The NRM is pretty tight on space, a fairly normal EMU will struggle to get in.

So much for a total destruction order.

Not that I’m complaining, as I do very much like the trains.

Are there any photos online of the shredder at Newport?

Looking at Google sat view it's possible to make out an area that is presumably set aside for final cutting of the coach body shells; I could make out a pair of mk3 DVT shells neatly placed on their sides alongside each other, and also several HST trailer car /hauled coach bodies there too. All look to be already partially dismantled with running gear completely removed - perhaps on arrival at reception sidings then bodies craned into place? - also are interiors stripped before delivery to Newport? There appears to be another rake of stock in the limited arrival siding so they must have to move pretty quickly to make space for the next successive delivery.

The interest is their story rather than because of any particular interest - I'm not sure (373s apart) what an "exciting" EMU would be?

Fantastic livery, and great to see an end vehicle saved. Definitely looks odd without the yellow cab!

This might well be a special case. Though I doubt there being much desire to preserve more than a few cabs, if any.

Heathrow will probably give them to whoever is willing to pay, Siemens probably wanted something to display outside their office, the HeX vehicles would probably be rather cheap.

NRM stated it wasn't viable unfortunately but they would have been interested.

Also note that the front ends of the 332s were initially built as black so if anything it's returning 001 to as-built condition.

Expect to see more of 001 in the coming days too ;)

Wonder if Wikipedia will accept the LinkedIn post as evidence of a driving carriage having been preserved. Surely a photo will be more than suitable :D

Presumably that was so nobody could suddenly get a cheap fleet and run it in competition to Heathrow?

They would have a job with just the driving car but I like the idea of a 153 esc set up

A bit random considering that the visible part, the bodywork, was built by CAF!

If anything, it would be more appropriate for this vehicle to be outside the CAF factory in Newport :D

They were ordered from Siemens even if the bodywork was made by CAF.

Not wanting to go off topic of thread, but given the rate at which stock has been arriving there in the last few weeks I can't imagine anything survives more than 24-48 hours.

If that’s another pair as has been usual, then I think (based on a quick search through this thread) there’ll only be 2 more complete units left to go? Is anyone keeping tabs?
That is correct. 332001 as above, 332014 went by road, 8 have gone by rail to Newport.

Unless wikipedia was wrong, I was under the impression that Siemens was subcontracted by CAF.

I'm not sure which Wikipedia page you're looking at, but British Rail Class 332 - Wikipedia clearly states "Following BAA being granted rights to operate services from London Paddington to Heathrow Airport, 14 trains were ordered in July 1994 from Siemens."

Scrapped in 2025 when the plant closes then.

Anyone know which driving vehicle from 001 has been saved (78400 or 78401), and could confirm the date and destination (presumably, Sims / Newport) of the remainder of 001 and also date#/ destination for 014, many thanks.
