Recently, went on 19:33 EC train Kings Cross->Leeds. Had a standard class ticket, but opted for the dining car. Was very impressed. Reminded me of the good old GNER days
I do not understand why the East Coast service needs to be re-franchised. It's a profitable service for the DfT and ticket sales more the cover the cost of running the service. Once re-privatised, why would the DfT want to share the profits with a private company via the premia arrangement that will follow between DfT and private operator ?
And when the service is privatised (again), you can expect some tight arsed generic private operator. We're heading from some pretty austere times, so expect the operation to be run as cheaply as possible.
