Stratford City springs to mind or Stratford Westfields might be better

The problem with it is that Stratford is just as close to Westfield as Stratford Int'l is. No suggestion for Stratford Int'l including its current name ever feels right.

Sorry, you'll need to explain further about Rushden. Following that logic, every station in the country would have to list any nearby town. It's not even as if Wellingborough station has a convenient bus link to Rushden.

I would in an attempt to increase usage. As for the bus link, it's something I've long said should happen, and think it should even more with the housing developments.

Caledonian Road and Barnsbury is on Caledonian Road but not in Barnsbury!

Shoreditch High Street was given it's name to distinguish it from the former East London line terminus station.

Catford station is not only served by Thameslink trains so your proposed renaming is misleading and could cause confusion.

1. Is it not? If it's not Barnsbury where is it officially, Pentonville, Holloway?
2. I assumed so, but it does seem a bit pointless. It's like renaming Rochester to Rochester Castle because it was resited.
3. I'm pretty sure Southeastern doesn't call at Catford at all. Happy to be proven wrong, mind.

There was only a three year gap between closing Shoreditch and opening Shoreditch High Street so it was necessary to make it clear that it was at a different location. I think that it would be reasonable to drop "High Street" from the name when the station becomes due for some redecoration.

I suggested it just to make it simpler, but I know the costs could never be justified.

A lot of station names in Cardiff are misleading. For instance, Llandaf station on the Merthyr line in is the ajoining suburb of Llandaff North / Ystum Taf while Llandaff's own station on the City Line is called Danescourt.

Similarly Cathays station should be called Cathays Park as it serves the Civic Centre and Cardiff University rather than the suburb of Cathays while on the Coryton Line, Birchgrove is closer to Heath and Llanishen than to its titular inspiration.

Admittedly, this is partly because, for a compartively small city, Cardiff has a large number of stations and multiple railway lines. One presumes Birchgrove was so named, for instance, because there was already a Llanishen station and two Heath HL/LL stations nearby.

I would call it "Birmingham Airport (for the NEC)", the latter being a subscript on the signs only. I think there was a scheme to actually do that, wasn't there, but it was dropped due to cost?

Birmingham International does confuse people, I've been asked if it was the centre before by another passenger, because "New Street" sounds like some obscure mini-station.
To describe its location, a better name might be East Solihull (for NEC and Airport)

and just possibly,
Birmingham (New St.) > Birmingham Shopping Centre

Manchester (Piccadilly) > Manchester East
Manchester (Victoria) > Manchester North
Manchester (Oxford Road) > Manchester South.
???

Colchester should definately be renamed Colchester North to remove confusion. For 50 years or more ALL the local bus companies have referred to it in timetables and on maps as just 'North Station' or 'Colchester North', destination indicators on front show just 'North Station' but for the unknowing traveller, trains don't go there, thus causing confusion for people wanting to catch local buses. Colchester station is 1.5 miles from the town centre which is on top of a hill, 20 mins walk or 5 minutes by bus.
Years ago St Botolphs (actually in the town centre) was renamed Colchester Town, to help people go to Colchester. Colchester Town is close to what is laughably called Colchester Bus Station, which is in reality just a collection of bus stops along a couple of roads. Any resemblance to a proper bus station is purely coincidental

Burley Park doesn't mean anything so agree Hyde Park.
You could change the name Burley Park to Cardigan Road, since that was the original name of the goods station. It isn't especially convenient for most of Hyde Park though. It's in, and mostly serves the area on going up from Burley Road, which was always called Burley or Burley Park when I lived in it.

Firstly, my apologies with respect to Catford. Southeastern's own website suggested that they serve that station. Only when l delved deeper did it show that they were actually Thameslink services that were being shown.

With respect to Caledonian Road and Barnsbury, ever since l've lived in Islington (from 1990) that area has been known as "the Caley". The Caley is wall to wall council blocks. Barnsbury is several blocks over.

The only name I think would be appropriate would be Stratford Highspeed, similar to City Thameslink and West Hampstead Thameslink, but you are right though I’m not sure what name would fit that station

From looking at a map you could do Stratford North (Intl) and Stratford South (the other one).

Or if it wasn't for Crossrail you could do "Stratford Queen Elizabeth Park" for Intl.

From my local area, I would suggest....

Paisley St James > Paisley St Mirren (right next to St Mirren's stadium)
Paisley Gilmour Street > Paisley Central
Paisley Canal > Paisley South
Hawkhead > Paisley East
Mosspark > Cardonald South (Mosspark, the area is a mile away and has Corkerhill Stn.)
Bishopton > Bishopton & Dargavel
Woodhall > Port Glasgow East
Port Glasgow > Port Glasgow Central
Bogston > Port Glasgow West
Cartsdyke > Greenock East
Branchton > Greenock South

I would also say that a lot of Glasgow's stations need renamed as the names don't always convey what they are near i.e Mount Florida > Hampden and High Street > Merchant City
Didn't the owners of St. Mirren FC ask for St James station to be renamed a few years back? I imagine they quickly changed their minds when told how much it would cost and that they'd have to foot the bill!
The two Hammersmith stations and the two Edgware Road stations on the London Underground.
Surely you'd only need to rename one of each? ;)

At first glance I thought you were suggesting the "(Intl)" should be retained in the name of the high-speed station, which resulted in imagining Lizzie Line announcements "The next station is Stratford South (The Other One). Change for Central Line, etc"!

TPE adopted Lea Green as their railhead for St Helens - the original Franchise spec was to call at St Helens Jn but TPE argued successfully - rightly or wrongly - St Helens would be better served by Lea Green.

Journey planners will direct an unknowing passenger from e.g. York or Huddersfield to change at Newton for St Helens Jn whereas if they are being met or plan to Taxi on arrival they might be better on the direct train to Lea Green. Do non-railway minded people in St Helens know they can get a direct train from Lea Green to e.g. Leeds?

For me Lea Green should be re-named to reflect it serves St Helens - eg 'Lea Green and St Helens South', and ideally picked up by any journey planner enquiry for St Helens to show it as an option.

Witley is actually in the village of Wormley, about a mile and a half from the village of Witley.

The two Hammersmith stations are directly opposite each other across the road. The walk between them is shorter than the walk between lines through the tunnels at many other Tube stations. So I think I'd leave those alone.

Edgware Road I would probably agree, they are not as near to each other.

I don't entirely get why Bank and Monument are named separately; one side of me would rename the whole thing to Bank-Monument.

The only reason these two have separate names is because of the way the station has developed. Pre-DLR it was simply one escalator and a subway which linked the two stations, the street entrances to which were otherwise some way apart. It was only when the DLR came that more subways were built and the whole place became more one.

It would probably make life easier to rename the whole place properly as one, as it does cause quite a bit of confusion with people unfamiliar with the setup. It’s managed and operated as one.

Bletchley - Milton Keynes South
Wolverton - Milton Keynes North

(This giving justification for the "Central" in Milton Keynes Central ;) )
Something similar was proposed for Wellington, possibly in the late 1980s, to be renamed Telford West. This idea went down very badly with some of the inhabitants of the town, who regarded Wellington as being a cut above the rest of Telford and if they had their way it wouldn't be part of Telford at all.

The compromise was to rename the station Wellington - Telford West, and it has now reverted to being just Wellington.

I disagree. It was St. Helens Council who did the persuading. They were trying the "push" the Lea Green area as a development area, even though the station site is not in Lea Green.

And whilst the car park looks quite big, (pre-Covid) it became over-filled quite early on weekdays, although I suspect that many of those parking worked at the nearby school or businesses.

Caledonian Road & Barnsbury -> Barnsbury
Shoreditch High Street -> Shoreditch
Brondesbury -> Brondesbury Kilburn
Norwood Jun -> South Norwood Junction
Catford -> Catford Thameslink
Wellingborough -> Wellingborough for Rushden (like Alnmouth)
University -> Birmingham University (University is as descriptive as calling London Bridge "Bridge")
Staines -> Staines-upon-Thames (half serious)
West Drayton -> West Drayton & Yiewsley

I also feel like Stratford Int'l should change, but no idea to what.
University has manged ok since 1978. Everyone seems to kniw where theyre going. And as its only 2 miles or so from Birmingham City centre, it doesnt take much working out.

Tottenham Court Road (TCR) station was there before Centre Point was even thought of. Warren Street is at the junction of that street and TCR - there is nothing wrong with the current name. Similarly Goodge Street station is at the junction of that street and TCR.

As you say the current entrance at Chancery Lane is a little away from that street. However changes in the entrance is not a great reason to rename stations. Hatton Garden would be wildly inappropriate - further than Chancery Lane and in actual fact Farringdon is closer to Hatton Garden.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the name of Holborn.

Finally the Bakerloo at Charing Cross was originally called Trafalgar Square until Charing Cross was rebuilt for the Jubilee line in the 70s. There is absolutely zero reason to undo that.

Centre Point may be a fairly recent concoction, however St. Giles Circus goes back rather further. As you say, there's two other stations which debouch onto Tottenham Court Road (one of which used to be so named, and sits roughly at the mid-point of that thoroughfare rather than tucked away at the extreme south end). The TCR name may be appropriate for the Central Line, but IMO it's completely inappropriate for the Northern, hence why it's one I'd look at.

I find the Holborn name completely inappropriate. As well as the fact that the street named Holborn sits some considerable distance to the east, even further east than Chancery Lane station, the Holborn area is generally regarded to be bounded by what is now Holborn station and running eastwards to roughly the Farringdon Road. Chancery Lane station is far more strategically positioned to serve that area than today's Holborn, which more serves what would be regarded as Bloomsbury to the north, Aldwych to the south, and perhaps to a lesser extent St Giles and Covent Garden to the west. Like TCR which has arisen purely because of a quirk of history in terms of being a suitable name for the Central Line station which came first, we only have Holborn because it happened to be the nearest station on the Piccadilly Line, remembering that the Central Line didn’t have a station here until the 1930s. If things were being designed from scratch now I think it’s highly unlikely both these stations would be named as they are, and I’d say it’s a certainty Chancery Lane wouldn’t be.

As I said, Hatton Garden was a bit of a wild card, as Holborn is a more suitable name for Chancery Lane. The reason I gave Hatton Garden a mention is simply that Chancery Lane station is heavily used by people heading there. Farringdon doesn't get this to the same extent.

The renaming of Trafalgar Square to Charing Cross was all well and good when the Jubilee Line linked the two stations, however we now have a situation where the two sets of platforms are now some considerable distance apart, with pretty much separate street entrances. I don't find this particularly satisfactory, especially as it encourages tourists (virtually all of whom would be coming to visit Trafalgar Square, rather than Charing Cross) to arrive at the "wrong" part of the station.

Imagine you are coming into London via Paddington or Marylebone and wish to continue your journey on a train from Charing Cross - having the Bakerloo Line platforms re-named to Trafalgar Square would be very confusing.

Easy to misinterpret - it's like New Southgate and New Barnet with mythical Thameslink calls on the maps. And interesting, I always thought it was always just in Barnsbury.

Stratford Highspeed, like TGV stations makes sense. Or you could do a different French style and go for "Stratford Kent" i.e. the Stratford station for Kent.

From looking at a map you could do Stratford North (Intl) and Stratford South (the other one).

Or if it wasn't for Crossrail you could do "Stratford Queen Elizabeth Park" for Intl.

North and South could work, however, High Street is South of both of them.

But on a ticket machine, it's not brilliant. What's to tell someone that it's not Aston Uni rather than Birmingham? Seeing "University" on the displays in say, Nottingham or Cardiff feels odd. I would be amazed if someone hasn't gone to the wrong station by accident.

Imagine you were coming into London via Paddington or Marylebone (walk to Baker Street) and wish to continue your journey on a train from Fenchurch Street. You have to get a train to Aldgate or Tower Hill and walk from there.

The Bakerloo platforms at Charing Cross are a good old walk away from the mainline station. The announcements currently say "This is Charing Cross, exit here for Trafalgar Square". That could be changed to "This is Trafalgar Square, exit here for Charing Cross". It would certainly help the tourists when they come back.

Yes, i agree with the point about the ticket machine problem. I think tho it may have University (Bham) in brackets, but cant swear to that.
I think the station in the West Midlands that does need a re name and has been a bugbear of mine for years is Sandwell & Dudley.

Yes, however one should view that against the numbers who wish to visit Trafalgar Square. It wouldn’t be that difficult to show something on the map as is done in other places.

In fact one wonders if the Northern Line platforms shouldn’t just be closed altogether since they’re so near to Embankment, and that station be made the station for Charing Cross. I’d say it’s less of a walk from the Bakerloo platforms at Embankment to Charing Cross mainline station. Both of the current Charing Cross lines have a torturous route from LU platforms to the mainline concourse.

If your logic was followed Covent Garden, which is close to Leicester Square, would also be closed....

I actually bought a ticket to University in 2020 and I can't remember either. Sandwell & Dudley could definitely go back to Oldbury. After the Brierley Midland Metro extension, maybe Avanti should call at Dudley Port rather than S&D.

London Liverpool Street to something else (maybe London Bishopsgate)?

I seem to recall another thread where this was proposed to prevent confusion at Stansted Airport between trains going to Liverpool Lime Street (the actual city of Liverpool) and trains going to London Liverpool street (the London Station).

Unlikely I suppose...
Confusion existed at Norwich with departures on adjacent platforms for London Liverpool Street and Liverpool Lime Street. So yes, London Bishopsgate would be a welcome change.

Why not just get rid of the name Charing cross and rename the station(s) Trafalgar Square. That would avoid confusion with the hospital.

Yes, also at Harwich at one time, where you could see trains for "Liverpool Street" and "Liverpool L Street"!
