Looks like it is a month long lockdown given what's being said on the BBC.

This is absolutely ridiculous. All the trajectories are the same as respiratory disease every winter.

I've voted Conservative in most elections (not the last one though), and I am going to remember this for the rest of my life. They aren't getting my vote ever again.

A ban on outbound international travel will be interesting to enforce! Short of turning people away at the gates it will be impossible to enforce. Plenty of people will simply pay the fine and board the flight unless stopped. If people have to quarantine on return then there is no medical justification, its simply to avoid people who can't go away getting annoyed.

Which means, unfortunately, it probably isn't going to last a month. It'll quite possibly be three or four, because I can't see this going before the winter's over.

I would say that's an absolute mininum. I reckon realistically we're looking at 6 months. Why wouldn't they keep us locked down? There won't be an economy left at all, a massive number of people will be cripplingly depressed, many will have killed themselves, so the damage will already have been done. So he may as well keep on doing damage.

How does one go about getting Boris and co. charged with crimes against humanity?

I am not sure there will be many flights leaving or coming into the UK for the next few months to be honest! They also have the model of Australia to follow where people need to apply for permits to leave..

Fortunately Ireland prevents that by making it impossible to police. The Tories want to get re-elected, there are limits to how far they will go. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just blanket 14 day quarantine and travel advice warning. In which case it wouldn't really be a ban for anyone who is retired or can WFH (travel insurance against FCO travel advice is very easy to get now).

"domestic travel will be discouraged". Not forbidden. Well that's me still travelling then. The nature of what I'm travelling for is very solitary anyway (long distance walk with one other person) so I think my common sense will win out here.

If I can't go on holiday abroad I will go on holiday in the UK, if I can't do that I will do multiple day trips. It would be safer to let me go abroad and quarantine for 14 days on return!

Have to see how its worded, and how the travel nazis enforce what they think the guidelines say.

I just went down to my local morrisons to get dinner, and it's already kicking off. There was a fist fight at one of the checkouts and already a lot of the main staple shelves are emptying. This is chaos. I've decided to abandon that plan and go into town where hopefully the smaller shops are more sane.

What the hell is happening.

According to the Daily Mail, UK wide cases today have fallen by over a 1000 today compared to last Saturday.

Department of Health statistics show Britain crossed the grim milestone today after recording a further 21,915 positive cases of coronavirus - bringing the national total to 1,011,660.

The cases represented a five per cent drop from last Saturday, when 23,012 positive tests were announced, in a sign the UK's second wave may be decelerating.

This to me suggests cases may have peaked anyway even without this lockdown.

I decided against trying to buy any food for the forseeable future if the shops go to pot again. If necessary I'll just eat a takeaway for every meal. It'll be very unhealthy, but it won't be Covid so it won't matter.

Indeed. 21, 915 cases today. It really is looking like cases have peaked now. But I bet there's no mention of this in this press conference, ahead of this ridiculous month long total lockdown!

Do SAGE know something we don't? The Daily reported infection rate has hovered between 20000 and 24000 for a couple of weeks, yet they are screaming exponential increases in cases. I'm genuinely interested to know where they are drawing their figures from.

Perhaps they should be more open as to their data sources, and also to any third party sponsors.

a) they may not have peaked, - just because there is a slight dip in today's figures
b) no, it isn't a total lock down *, schools and universities will continue subject to the requirement to isolate

* we haven't had a "lockdown" at any time this year. We have had quarantines and other restrictions. Using the Americanism 'lockdown' is either ignorance or sensationalist. Look up the meaning of the word.

OK, if you don't like the word lockdown, how about 'human rights abuses on a massive scale'? We to use 'lockdown' as it's snappier, but we could start using a more accurate wording if you like.

Wonder what's going on here?

He can't hold a press conference until the Cabinet have signed off on whatever is to be announced. So my guess is that Cabinet can't agree on what to do and therefore announce...

It's also looking like Wales and Scotland are going to stick to their restriction plans which will mean that once the lockdown strong national measures go into effect in England and Wales ends its 'fire break', Scotland and Wales will have less strict restrictions than England, possibly for the first time during the pandemic?

Shut the schools (go back to March's regime of children of key workers only)

I won't keep harping on about it, but even the National Education Union are on my side now!

Link on that last point please? Not that it's an issue of course as it's the Department for Education that's in charge..

The biggest single mistake has been sending the students back to university. Massive driver of increased transmission, and now they’re in limbo.

'Restrictions' are good and 'snappy' enough. Emotive soundbites like "human rights on a massive scale" mean absolutely nothing. These measures, although poorly timed, announced and managed are entirely within the scope of the 1984 Public Health act.

How do our future generations get educated then?

Doesn't matter, just like cancer deaths, suicides, unemployment and bankruptcies don't matter. All that matters now is the virus and pretending that it can be 'controlled'
