:s Anyone know how much new track mileage has been opened in the U.K. in the past decade (and where)?

Not talking here about replacing track on already open routes, or doubling what was previously just a single track, etc., but instead what is effectively completely "new" track (or at the very least the re-opening of a closed line where the track had previously been lifted).

Sunderland - South Hylton - not sure of the exact distance but it is owned by NR so would count.

Does Birch Coppice count ?? I didnt think the track to Baddesley Colliery had been lifted before Birch opened.

I wouldnt say that counts either as the entrance was never lifted.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Looks like the High Speed 1 line might be more new track mileage than everything else added together!

:| Wasn't there a freight only line in place before the recent improvements?

More promising for the future, Metrolinks got 4 lines and a short spur, 37.25 miles of new track opening between now and 2016, though 16 of that is conversion of the Oldham Loop.

The first section the Media City spur will open in September, almost 10 years to the month after the last new extension section opened to the public. Does kind of resonate with a decade of little progress.

Various DLR branches.
Surely some new track in S Wales?

And who could forget to mention the 3/4 of a mile of (not exactly high speed) track between Llynclys South and Penygarreg Halt in Shropshire? ;)

Coming up though this decade of course are various projects in Wales and Scotland, as well as Crossrail. 8)

I'm unsure how it is measured, as normal TW track is km but as the extension is on NR metals, it should be miles and chains. Plus I also wonder where the datum point is as well, most likely Sunderland I expect.

Wasn,t the Maryhill line always there anyway and used by freight?
New stations certainly.

What about it?

This thread is about lines reopened during the last ten years.

Actually

No, it was closed and lifted since the 1980s. (I wrote 'Maryhill - Anniesland', not 'Cowlairs - Maryhill'.)

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Axminster Loop- 3 miles
= doubling what was previously just a single track

Would Drumgelloch to Bathgate be the longest excepting the new HS line?
