Last night on the local tv news, I think it was BBC East Midlands Today, they spoke to a train manager on the MML and showed you just a couple of passengers sitting in an empty carriage. The train manager said that many of their Sheffield and Nottingham to London trains are currently running with only about half a dozen passengers.
They are currently running hourly from both Sheffield and Nottingham to London. I suppose with current social distancing they still have plenty of spare capacity if passenger numbers increase during the coming weeks, especially if they use their HST’s.
No one knows at the moment how quickly passenger numbers will rise as the lockdown is slowly lifted during the coming months, or how long the current social distancing measures will remain the same. If people begin to travel by train to work and for other business purposes in any numbers will there be any spare seats for leisure travel once that is permitted, even at a restricted level. It is going to be very difficult to travel by train using TOC’s such as EMR, Northern and XC with their limited capacity. How are they going to cope with any numbers with 2 and 3 carriage trains between major cities like Nottingham and Birmingham, Nottingham and Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds, and XC routes using 4 and 5 carriage Voyagers.
