I need to be in York for 18:00 on Friday 18th June and return asap after 0400 on the 19th June.

Could anyone give me any suggestions on how to make this ticket cheaper than the £46.90 i've been quoted?

If you change at Preston then use the Northern service to York via Burnley & Halifax:

Lancaster-Blackburn : anytime return £13.90

Blackburn - York : Anytime return (Route Burnley ) £20.60

There are plenty of advance tickets from Lancaster to Huddersfield, and advances from Hudersfield to York. Didn't check last night but now I have there aren't any from Lancaster to Dewsbury.

East Coast is showing it valid, a very good find! Although slightly limited by the fact you have to use the Northern services via Skipton.

So if i buy an anytime return for Carlisle to Middlesborough it's valid all the way down here? That's mad!

Forgive my ignorance, i'm new to all this ticketing stuff. Normally i'd have just got to the station and paid whatever I was asked but I was pointed here.

it is valid - but if anyone checks your ticket they will almost certainly ask questions about it.

I think both mytrainticket.co.uk and raileasy will allow it to be booked with seat reservations via Preston/Manchester (but charge booking fees). Eastcoast only allows it westbound.

I assume that putting it on here makes it more likely they will 'fix' it soon, but what's the point of having a loophole if nobody uses it?

Well i've booked it through Raileasy.co.uk - i even specified via Manchester Pic and it was still £22.80.

I think i'll take a copy of my booking with me though just incase any questions are asked.

Inded it is valid for maps NC+MH+TP which allows Carlisle - Crewe - Manchester - Middlesbrough

It is also valid via the S&C so is cheaper than a NE Round Robin (£39)

The only acronym is the S&C, which usually*, and in this context, refers to the Settle-Carlisle line, originally part of the Midland Railway from London St Pancras but now the regular service is just Leeds-Carlisle.

NC+MH+TP are maps in the National Routeing Guide, see http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide which is the incredibly complex set of documents that determines permitted routes.

i'd watch out on the ticket because.. southern, transpennine, east coast, northern and virgin.. are all saying the £22.80 ticket is not valid via manchester....... even though permitted routes are allowing.

No they aren't saying that. Thetrainline isn't allowing it.

But if a big deal is made of it, expect the RG to be 'amended', and another useful ticket lost.

Whereabouts enroute were you gripped ? I checked the National Rail Journey Planner and it said that you had to buy two separate tickets for the Carlisle - Middlesbrough via Manchester journey.

National Rail Journey Planner does not define permitted routes. The Routeing Guide does, and it is a permitted route.

I used Raileasy and got one ticket for each direction. 'Any permitted route'. Nobody even looked twice. A real bargain! Better than 18-20MPG on the motorway haha
