I'm presuming there's a team somewhere that considers such ideas for a job. I seem to recall some kind of formula for calculating flows between centres of this or that size and distance.
I imagine something of that kind informed thinking on e.g Crossrail2 rather than just a 'rehash' of the pre-war Ealing to Southend trains.
