Dear all, i have not seen this elsewhere but i thought i would give it a mention here.

LOROL are to get Class 165 units from half sister Chiltern for the Gospel Oak to Barking route as the class 172 is as usual with everything Bombardier behind schedule. Crew training starts next week.

I do not know how many class 165s LOROL are going to borrow, but what i do know is that the class 150s which are earmarked for First Great Western have had the 2-2 seating replaced with the original 3-2 Silverlink spec. So i assume that all the 150s will go at the start of the new summer timetable, if indeed all 5 150 units go the same number of 165s will be needed to cover at least.

Is this from a reliable source? It just seems unlikely as we barely have enough 165s at Aylesbury to cover Chiltern services.
Are the 165s even passed for the Gospel Oak - Barking line? They are fairly route-restricted due to their width.

I'm led to believe there is just one 165 heading to LO from the start of the Summer timetable, and presumably gauging tests have already been done.

But then, if you believed all the rumours you heard, half the country would be electrified and using 319s

Cheers,

Barry

Well observed RPM. This exact rumour came about a while ago. However it was played down due to the width of the Chiltern 165s. I second Chiltern not being having enough 165s at Aylesbury to cover Chiltern services.

I'd hope so - 313103 does work for LOROL.

Thanks Pumbaa,

First point the use of class 165s is only for a short time and will be used until suffecent class 172s have arrived (currently we have just one and that is doing mileage accumilation and other assorted tests on the WCML.

Second point not sure about gauging issues as i dont sign that route. However i am sure they have used this route before especially as they go to Ilford.

As for being a reliable source that was one of the reasons i put it on here as i am sure you guys know more this stuff then i do. The other reason is that my Conductor Manager has been told she is to go to Aylesbury Depot and has been given class 165 handbooks. A small amount of drivers are going to be trained as will a small amount of Conductors.

I will try to speak to one of our Driver Managers who is very well clued up on these types of things.

Only for FGW to rip them all out again... IIRC FGW want a similar layout to the Wessex refurbs

Glad to hear it! - ive never liked the original BR Seats in the 150s...Although i hope they dont do what wessex did...and make the legroom for pencils...

Either way, looking foward to the first units to come over...

Mind you, when i was on one about a month ago...seems there already preparing for there moove to the west country! The 150 I was on only had Vist the West Country adverts on board!

Not sure if this is related, but I saw a FGW 165/166 go through West Hampstead a few nights ago.

That one was probably going to Bombardier at Ilford. They are regular visitors there, presumably for heavy exams.

Just to pick up on the clearance issue. I can't give a full answer as to whether or not these units have been cleared for the GOBLIN route, but I should point out that they don't go that way to reach Ilford. They follow the electrified NLL towards Stratford before popping out onto the GEML at Channelsea. Consequently they probably haven't yet been cleared for the GOBLIN route. However, this doesn't automatically mean that there will be problems with clearances.

For purposes of correction, there are two Class 172's as 172002 is being tested at the Old Dalby test track.

Ilford Works handle C4 work on the 165/166 fleet, although the C4 work will be transferred to another location (unknown to me) in the near future.

One 165/2 will be working for London Overground, although will return to Aylesbury for heavy maintenance. Thus over a period of time, it's likely that different units will be used.

There is no such thing as a 165/2, I think you may mean a 165/1 or 166/2 ;).

Yes. In terms of the Body shell and original lighting before the 165s were refurbished.

Not as far as the bodyshell is concerned. The 165/166 body shell uses the same method of construction, but is a bit larger than a 465 to take advantage of the less restrictive loading gauge on the Great Western and Great Central route.

That's why there's debate about whether the 165 is cleared for the GOBLIN. If it were a 465 under discussion for the GOBLIN it would be fine, apart from the lack of DC volts and signal immunisation :)

Sorry for disrupting the topic, but I've heard about the 465's effect on signals and always wondered what it was all about?

The 465s were the first trains equipped with a full set of modern power electronics (someone will fill you in with the full technical details) and as a result could potentially cause electrical interference.

This meant that the routes that they were due to run on required the signalling to be immunised (shielded) from any possible electrical noise. The 465s were restricted to running on certain routes as a result, and you would see signs (for example at Victoria) showing where 465s were not permitted to go beyond.

It's a bit like how in the old days some domestic electrical equipment caused interference to TVs and radios, and how mobile phones can interfere with them these days.

Not quite correct - the body profile is the same but the 165's are 23m long as opposed to 465 at 20m hence the wider body becomes an issue due to the greater overhang on curves.

165-2 car.

I see what you meant but as 'thefab444' stated it would be called 165/0

The first number e.g 165 represents the Class of train.

The second number e.g /2 represents the sub class of the train. So the second subclass of that class of train to built.

Back On topic now

http://www.barking-gospeloak.org.uk/news.htm according to this website its is only going to be one Chiltern Railways 165 and it will join in September this year.

Mea culpa - I did mean to write longer rather than larger!
