Not offering advice, but I find it frightening how such a situation can seemingly arise so easily. It should be a warning to be very careful with personal information at all times, and especially on the internet. One reason why I would never participate in the likes of "twitbook" is that they want as much personal information as possible about you - and you can never be certain that it is 100% secure.

Finding someone’s name and address is really rather easy even without social media. And giving a valid name and address is all that would be required by a train company.

There are couple of Identity fraud incidents reported in this forum at last and this month. I am not sure if re-introducing nationwide ID scheme would solve the problem.

Government launched a call for evidence on Digital Identity in July 2019 and this explicitly states the intention is to create a secure digital identity system which doesn’t involve ID cards.
