Hello all, I didn’t know where to put this, so I thought I’d just put it in here and the moderators can move things where they wish.

Some of you may or may not be aware that Railway football is picking up. We have had the London Underground League for a while, the different lines including BTP, Tubelines play each other in weekly fixtures with cup games in the season. Most teams do a fair bit for charity too, so it’s worth getting behind if you fancy combining railway with football.

The railway Flexi League kicked off this year with Great Northern Thameslink, Thameslink and Southern, Brighton Traincrews and my team South Western Railway. Fixtures spread out from Brighton, Croydon, London and Hitchin and with more TOCS joining next year it will expand.

You can find out more information about the relevant leagues here -

London Underground League on Twitter - @LULeagueLondon

Railway flexi league on Twitter - @RailwayFlex

And a plug for my team @swrtcfc

Some info on the railway flexi league -

http://fulltime-league.thefa.com/Index.do?divisionseason=219188440&league=926873014

Some teams sell memorabilia like pin badges etc. I know we do, the district and Great thames Northern.

And the way they're going, the old Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway team will be back playing at that level before too long... :'(

That's a question - are there any other professional teams (the L&Y railway team became Manchester United if anyone didn't know) that started out as railway teams?

I can’t think of any other football teams to be fair, but there has been success stories of players who played for railway teams who have been signed by clubs in higher leagues or work on the railway and play for established teams already. Hopefully projects like this will bring further success.

Had no idea about the L&Y team!

Specifically, they were the team of the Carriage and Wagon department at the Newton Heath depot. There's still a depot at Newton Heath, I've no idea if it's the same depot - anyone?

No idea. I’m ok the south western region at the moment and will still be too far away when I move to Chiltern!

I know we are followed on Twitter by harrogate Railway FC and great Thames Valley FC who are railway associated. I believe the RMT sponsor the latter.

Not full time pro, but Inverurie Loco Works of the Highland League would qualify. The RMI of Leigh RMI stood for Railway Mechanics Institute.

Crystal Palace F.C. play at Selhurst Park on land they acquired from the railway in the 1920s, as a matter of railway/football trivia.

More railway/football trivia is Forfar’s aptly-named ground Station Park being one of the furthest grounds from a railway station in the UK.
[Apologies for going OT though]
