Hi All,
I remember getting an express (it may even have been called an InterCity) train from Southampton Parkway to London Waterloo in 1993, which stopped only at Basingstoke, and was really pretty fast.
I know this route is now run by 450s and 444, but I can't for the life of me think what sort of train it would have been back then. I'm sure it was an EMU, and an image of a Networker comes to mind, but I don't remember any odd GTO inverter noises.

i do remember thinking at the time that it was quite modern, though not brand new.

Can anyone shed any light on it?
Thanks
Jon

Ahh, yes... that would make sense and it looks about right too. Thanks!
I tried working back from what the Desiros replaced, but it seems there we too many combinations. Looking at Wikipedia for the 442s it's pretty clear that was the train!

Thanks so much!
Best regards
Jon

Surely it was 442s on the service, plus they also had 2 x 159s though I am not sure if they had been taken off by then?

159s worked occasional Waterloo - Salisbury via Winchester services (which were essentially extended Waterloo - Southampton stoppers). These ceased around 2002.

Nice pic Devon Metro, i'd forgot just how good they looked in NSE livery, can't believe SWT got rid of them, they were great trains, to ride on and look at!

The new look:

I preferred the old SWT layout, particularly the buffet 'snug' area and the FC compos.:D

Urgh I dont want those back.

They used to be nice and Comfortable with blue and white art work of places local to the SWML like the needles on the IOW at the ends of the carriages, and the nice Buffet area had a sort of lounge bar feel to it. and better then the boring rubbish we have now.
