Both make sense... but why does it need to be displayed on the front? Other operators don't need to (nor to EMT on other units) - and the 52 and 57 ends are different.

Central Trains put 7 on some trains IIRC

Correct. The units have a 2 one end and a 7 the other end corresponding to the coach number.

As to why no idea but is also appears on the EMT 156s.
