Plenty of coatings out there that would last longer than the whitewash that’s applied.

Self-cleaning coatings, hydrophilic/phobic/TiO2 whatever.

Failing that, why not an intelligent spraying lance attached to one of the track recording vehicles or something.

After all, track geometry etc is a known quantity so it could be raised/lowered etc. Hell, with enough information loaded in to it and with a versatile-enough spraying head, it could avoid spraying clips etc while still spraying the web.

At least as important to spray the bottom flange which faces the sun more directly most of the time. Can't see a problem with spray on the clips.

I’d suggest it’s significantly easier and cheaper to get a gang of agency trackmen out with long brushes on the nightshift.

On that I would have to differ. Manpower, possessions, disruption to night traffic etc versus finding a path for a train similar to the weedkiller or RHTT?

Coincidentally I was at Woodsmoor (Hazel Grove line) and the rails had been sprayed white. Covered clips, sleepers and ballast and a very sharp edge too. Must (well pretty much must) have been done from something running on the rails unless they put masking tape down.

I'm not 100% certain but I'm sure I once saw some kit you you mount onto a hand trolley, this might have been how it was done.

About as long as it takes the supervisors kettle to boil whilst they’re waiting. But only if the kettle is being watched.

As a former perway engineer, I still differ. Unless you are talking VERY short lengths of track in isolated locations.
