Strange question but are Class 222 headlights meant to be symmetrical? I ask because a couple of times recently I have been walking over a pedestrian bridge over the MML and have seen an EMT class 222 with one of it two main headlights off. I think the side lights were lit on both sides.

I'm a bit worried because I remember reading something about 'A trains headlights not being lit' being something railway staff are meant to report immediately to the signaller as something endangering a train.

I'm not completely conversant with that class, but trains tend to have marker lights, which I think you meant by 'side lights' and should have a day or night headlight on depending on the time of day. I think what you seen was perfectly normal, So no need to worry. ;)

I suspect that just like most new units you have a day, night, day backup & night backup setting, so it maybe that a main bulb has blown & the driver has switched over to the backup setting.

Desiro's only have one headlight illuminated at any one time, dependent on the time of day or night. The only time you get two white lights on the front is when you select Markers & that's for going into the yards.

Are you sure? It went (left to right) lit sidelight, lit main light, unlit main light lit side light.

Trains in the UK only run with one headlight lit (I think the 225s are the only exception).
No doubt O L Leigh will be along soon to explain again (as usual when this gets asked ).

Thank you. I just wanted to make completely sure. I have seen it a couple of times, my mother goes up on one of those 222s quite regularly and my little sister was talking last night about going up on one this summer.

One of the times was after dark. Is that meant to happen?

today I will mostly be at home decorating
All modern trains only have one headlight lit, for daylight this will be the left hand one when looking at the front, so a daylight pattern would be-
marker on, headlight on, headlight off, marker on.
or
marker off, headlight on, headlight off, marker on.

night-time would be the mirror image of this.
Note that 91s are NOT modern and have both headlights on but as they are only 5 candle power each it doesnt count.
Hsts originally had 1 head light lit, then went onto both lit, but when they were refurbished (and more powerful lights fitted) they went back to 1 headlight on using the above standard.

The nighttime one was (I'm pretty certain) as I look at it from the front, Lit side, Lit main, Unlit main, Lit side.

If it matters it was on the Up fast just before a station in the south east at about 7.30 pm.

Probably using the night time setting, unless when the train left it's OP it was daylight & the driver forgot to switch it over, which is easily done.

Sometimes if it's getting towards mid/late afternoon/dusk, I'll select night headlights rather than day lights because that way I don't have to faff around unnecessarily with it mid journey.

SWT Driver (and any other drivers) I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but as a driver would you want to be told or to keep it quiet?

Told what? That I've got no headlight?

If you're on a Meridian the TMS will alert you, as it will on a Desiro, it flags up Lighting or Headlight Failure.

You've got tell-tales on the other stock. But at night you don't need to be told as it all of a sudden gets quite dark.

If you're going along in daylight & you don't notice that the headlight's failed, then I think it's a reasonable assumption that the driver of a train will either flick his lights at you & point down or flick his lights at you & pat his/her head or you'll get a call from siggy saying about it.

A favourite trick of mine used to be get in the cab, set it all up & then just before I left to turn them all back off again, thinking I was setting it up!

The number of times I accidentally went out with reds on the front & got one of the above, in the past I've lost count, now we have tell-tails & TMS's it's a little more difficult to do.

What you have seen is perfectly normal, the rule you refer to is no headlight being illuminated, if you see a train on a running line (ie outside of a yard or depot) with just marker lights or no lights at all.

Ive been stopped before for having no headlight on, it turned out to merely be a blown bulb which has gone after I had checked them. I would rather be told if someone had seen my train with no light on, as I dont have tell-tales in the cabs of the trains I drive so I have no way of knowing if a bulb blows en-route. Any member of rules competant staff with any sense of duty wouldnt think twice to reporting a train with no lights on.

Uh no, I'm quite sure the FCC rolling stock runs with more then just the head light lit.

313s run with the headlight as well as the markers during both day and night.

I know the 365s have a day setting as well as a night setting with the night headlight under the driver window as the day headlight under the secondman window.

I'm sure the other stock ie the 317s, 319s, 321s and 377s run with more then one headlight including a marker but not 100% sure without checking.

Plus any member of staff should know where the next possible place to pick up a emergency headlight should be if there isn't one available at that location.

I wasn't talking about markers, just the headlights themselves.

IIRC most 317s (or is it all?) only have a single headlight.
All of the trains you mention only have one on normally (not sure which, if any, can have both on at the same time).

They all run with one headlight and one marker on (not including the higher central one on the 377s)

as built317s ran with the headlight and both markers on some have WiPAC light clusters but still have both markers lit. 319s and 321s run with the marker next to the headlight off and the opposite side marker on.

Quite a lot of trains run with both markers and a headlight lit at the same time and new trains all seem to have both markers on as well as the headlight.

For some reason I wasn't thinking about the 317s when i said all of them :|

I haven't noticed this so much on newer ones. The ones that come to mind when mentioning newer trains are turbos and voyagers, both of which have the marker on the side of the lit headlight off.
I think the desiros run with markers on both sides though, now I think about it.
I was aware that quite a few run with all markers on, but it seems to be more on older trains from what I've seen.

Actually on 319's there is a difference between sub-classes, on a 319/0/2/4 the head light and both marker lights are on, but on a 319/3 its the marker light on the oppesite side to the headlight being used.
