If possible, I would most likely do Glasgow Central - Middlesbrough via Edinburgh Haymarket, Waverley, Newcastle, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Stockton, Thornaby & Middlesbrough - therefore adding a northbound express service rather than a Southbound to London.

I rather liked the Glasgow Trains idea - running from Glasgow down the S&C and then to Nottingham/Liverpool (if I remember rightly - I'm not sure about the S&C bit). Would have been an interesting route and would have restored intercity connections that can't be done today!

What happened to Glasgow Trains, anyway? Has the idea been rejected?

Realistically, if you were planning to run express along any mainlines you'd need 125mph stock to be allowed access and with all the HSTs, 22xs and 180s spoken for, you'd need new build.

You'd certainly not get far in your application if you wanted to use 37s and non-aircon mrk2s!

that's what i was thinking, that's why hull trains had to get 180's for east coast instead of 222's.

Thought Hull getting the 180s was so EMT could have all the 222s in one place and to let them expand their fleet whilst letting Hull remain a single-class fleet? Both are 125mph classes.

It is, though, part of why Hull had to replace the 170s with the 222s.

i think's it 5 car on express services, not first capital connect.

So that'll be the bulk of XC services running up and down the ECML then?

What a load of drivel.

On the other hand, this is not drivel. This is correct ;) Sonic, take note.

Newcastle to Great Yarmouth via Lincoln calling at York, Doncaster, Lincoln, Spalding, Peterborough, March, Ely, Norwich, Great Yarmouth.

Using whatever stock is available, probably using a setup similar to the WSMR trains.

Oxford, Lakes & Highland Trains

Running a 3xdaily between Perth & Oxford. Services running southbound at 07:00, 12.00, 17:00 - a typical timetable would be as follows.

07:00 Perth
07:17 Gleneagles
07:29 Dunblane
07:35 Stirling
07:43 Larbert
07:58 Lenzie
08:11 Glasgow Queen Street (a)
08:20 Glasgow Queen Street (d)
08:50 Motherwell
09:44 Carlisle
10:20 Oxenholme Lake District
10:55 Lancaster
11:13 Preston
11:36 Warrington
12:24 Wolverhampton
12:40 Birmingham New Street
13:10 Leamington Spa
13:27 Banbury
13:47 Oxford

Service to be operated by new build 7 car class 223 tilting units with dual power to take advantage of the wires between Motherwell and Birmingham New Street. 140mph capable under wires, 100mph under Diesel power.

Timetable created by working in partnership with local incumbant service operators. Eg Sub-letting/revenue sharing early morning service from Perth to Glasgow Queen Street from First-Scotrail thus potentially releasing a 3 car set to strengthen other services.

17:00 Service from Perth would offer a new late evening service southbound from Birmingham to Oxford at 22:40.

This all sounds very interesting, especially the path sharing bit. Presumably you'd do something similar with EMT to get through the Birmingham bottlenecks?

Not sure about Class 223, which is a diesel electric multiple unit nomenclature. I think with a hybrid, it would either be a Class 7x locomotive and coaches or maybe a Class 6xx multiple unit?

Would there be a profitable demand though, or are you just after the sort of thing that's beytter served by enthuiast "line basher" specials?
I don't think an OA company could survive doing just summer weekend afternoons. That's Charter territory.

Sonic could cross glasgow by using the union and city line but it would involve changing ends twice, probably at shields junction and bridge st junction which would impact heavily on his advertised time, you'd be looking at 30 minutes minimum, probably more. I think what is meant though, is by going via springburn and stepps, gartcosh junction, gartsherrie south junction and straight to motherwell passing through coatbridge central, whifflet and mossend yard.

I'm glad you came up with that option, because have to admit that I misunderstood the routes available around Glasgow. Hopefully it won't upset the timings too much.

So yes, that's the way it would go. Switching to the overhead juice at Motherwell.

Went for class 223 for dual powered, as I suspect by default with the planned introduction of the pantograph coach on the existing 220or221s the 220-229 range will be allocated to dual-powered multiple units.

Would "my" 7 car 223 fit in Glasgow Queen Street at present? I've read that plans are afoot to to increase the platform lengths at Glasgow Queen Street by extending into the current "mingle" area and rebuild.

I would probably re-open the ex-cross country service from Brighton to Manchester.
