Shortage of train crew for the refurb diagram today sadly and other is using for training

Would it be possible to do some training on the set at Wabtec? Take crew down there and get some training on the operation / functions ? Or start doing training round the clock up here ? Do training at night and pay overtime staff for doing so ? Get crew trained on other Classic sets elsewhere in uk ? Is this more a shortage of imagination and flexibility by all those involved to get this training done quicker in the interests of the passengers ? Not suggesting cutting corners on safety , but where there is the will there is the way ??

The broken down 04:53 from Inverness to Edinburgh has finally terminated at Edinburgh over 4 hours late! Both the LNER services from Aberdeen are now ridiculously late too, along with the CrossCountry service to Taunton.

Thank God it wasn't a refurbished set - the press would have even more of a field day than they're already having!

But surely, although the coaches are unrefurbished, the power cars are?

The power car "refurbishment" is only a repaint and fitting of traction interlock. Little mechanical work is done.

I was suggesting that it makes no difference that the set which suffered total power loss happened to be an unrefurbished one. Except to the media.

Is it clear if ScotRail are sponging 158s off the Montrose services, to cover for Classic HSTs?

If not, then surely there needs to be a contingency to suspend the Montrose services until Intercity capacity can be sorted out. Standing on a rammed 158 heading to Glasgow whilst passing an empty one which sits in Montrose sidings for 20 minutes at a time before a short working to Aberdeen, isn't the greatest of experiences.

I'm sure the average passenger would happily take a 5 minute extension to journey times to compensate for the loss of services from Stoney, Laurencekirk, and Portlethen, if it meant they can at least get a seat on a 4-car service.

They don't need to do anything of the sort, merely poont oit that the Roscos have had decades to get this sorted and have failed to do so, not the government's circus or the government's monkeys. Scotrail in particular knew the score when they took on the HSTs, knowing they'd have to get them done to a tight to unrealistic deadline even before wabtec started making a meal of things.

If they get carte blanche to keep running non PRM compliant stock indefinitely or even for anythimg mre than a few months after the deadline, then the disability rights lobby will be up in arms and rightly so and the press narrative will be 'government letting their corporate mates off the hook at the expense of passengers with disabilities.'
And you still don’t get it about PRM work and who is ultimately responsible. Well, I suppose you either don’t understand it or don’t want to understand it.

I've been saying this right from the start, and have been regularly slated for it, but thus far I've seen nothing to suggest it hasn't been an utter shambles.

It's certainly been badly executed and is currently shambolic, but, as you well know, the wisdom or otherwise of the original decision to take them is not for this thread.

The HSTs themselves (as trains, when they run, if enough staff are trained etc etc) seem to have performed rather well. A bad breakdown today but, as noted by Highlandspring just upthread it's the "First proper (ScotRail) HST failure on the main line in passenger service".

Don't confuse enthusiasm for HSTs at any cost with ultimately wanting a good train service. They're not the same thing.

Apart from the fact that it wasn't the 0453 that broke down....... It was the 0640 out of Aberdeen that did the 0453 was just held outside Arbroath instead of turning back to Aberdeen which led to the substantial delay

Wondered how long it would take for that to come up

Why has the third set not departed yet? This is a joke.

It was quoted last week on a post that it would arrive during the first week in March & as last Friday was the first day in March there is still a couple of days to go before the second week in March begins... So there is still time for it to arrive within the quoted time frame

But no delivery path has yet appeared on RTT, so it's looking increasingly unlikely.

HA10 on the 06:40 Aberdeen to Glasgow has broken down at Arbroath this morning. Back log of delayed trains behind it and some cancellations for the local Aberdeen-Montrose services.
I heard about that on BBC radio 2, in the back of my mind I did think maybe it was a HST that had failed

I think you mean if it was a refurb set it would have departed a lot quicker to reduce the delays behind.

Total loss of power is a pretty debilitating issue whether the train is fitted with power doors or not: I think they got the set moving as soon as they could!

The third set is fully formed in Wabtec Works now, with the buckeye couple exposed on the leading power car, so movement is hopefully imminent.

Don't remember much fuss when 170451 caught fire at Markinch a few weeks back, blocking the line for well over 2 hours.

I need to travel from central Scotland to Aberdeen for work and there's no way I'd risk the Scotrail service at the moment.

As someone who commutes between Dundee and Arbroath, I don't know what the situation is closer to the central belt, but this statement has all kinds of eyeroll coming from me.

I got on that packed 158 the other day (and lets not forget a 158 is a rare sight north of Dundee), and had to stand, but then that's the first time I've had to stand on this route in three years, so lets put this ****e in perspective!

I get the refurbished HST most mornings heading north and it's great - I always shake my head now when a 170 turns up instead.

When there's a full fleet of 4 and 5 car refurbished HSTs eventually running it will be fantastic!
