Northern Trainee Train Driver Roles- Various Locations

Hi. I'm new to the site.

I applied for a trainee train driver position at York at the beginning of the week.

I've zero experience working on railways but I thought I'd try my luck as I'm currently a fuel tanker driver.

The response I got was something like "Thanks for your application, we look forward to getting to know you more. You should here from us in 2-4 weeks".

The job is no longer advertised. I wondered if anyone else on the forum has applied?

I applied for this one and also one at Leeds which I received a rejection for yesterday. Although it didn't say on the email, I'm hoping the rejection was based on distance from the station, which should stand me in good stead for York. Positive attitude and all that

I’ve had a rejection for Liverpool today.....despite the same application getting me an interview with TfW.....and currently being in the talent pool with another TOC.

Just shows that not all TOC’s are looking for the same ‘key skills’

Now that is interesting. It really makes the mind boggle as to what exactly the TOC is looking for on the form. Again, though, I suppose it is all down to patience. They will know exactly what they want, and can afford to be choosy.

It has been ages since I have applied for any external job roles, so the whole game of getting through recruitment processes is quite new to me. Every rejection is a learning experience, and I am always editing applications to see what works.

I have all my Stage 1 & Stage 2 pyschometric passes so in a way I’m the type of candidate who could go straight to the DMI stage but obviously something was missing from my form to get through Northern paper sift.

I had one for Sheffield but I'm not reading too much into it. I have passed my assessments with another TOC but I suspect distance may have been an issue (I would need to relocate from the south). I wouldn't over analyse the rejection as it serves little purpose and the chances are you'll never find out why.

When did you apply for the Sheffield role? Did you apply for the recent recruitment drive in December?

Yep that's the one. There's also one still in progress for Newcastle from October which I had completely forgotten about! I expect there will be a 'no thanks' from them at some point.

Yes I've passed the assessments with another TOC and I'm awaiting a DMI.

Northern recruitment have previously told me that they do not accept "application on relocation". As in, if you don't currently live with 45 minutes of the station/depot you're applying to, they will not accept your application even if you tell them you'd be willing to move.

Harsh I know. The reason I was given is that too often people have said they would relocate, they'd be offered a start date and then something happened with a house sale or other such problem which meant they couldn't start when Northern needed them to.

Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but Northern can afford to be picky when the amount of applications they receive.

I applied for Liverpool & Manchester (on boxing day) and had an email about waiting an extra couple of weeks from the Manchester one but nothing about the Liverpool one. I have had an email from them today actually inviting me to do some online tests for a Customer Service Assistant in Manchester, but I applied for that back in November.

This is definitely correct.

I rec’d an email from them saying ‘no thanks’.....have you heard from them?

I’ve still got an application for Piccadilly I’m with them but used the same application so I’m expecting the same ‘no thanks’ for that.

There clearly is no consistency to as and when the inform candidates of the outcome so it’s back to the waiting game like in the summer for the TfW role

I've got 5 or 6 live applications with them for different positions, 2 trainee driving and couple customer service on the platforms and also ticket sales, I progressed with the customer service job and had some online testing to do over the weekend so must be ok with them to have more than one live application? The test was very difficult though, literacy and numeracy - mainly about percentages and percentage increases etc.

Mine too has changed to assessment. I have one in for Buxton also but that still says application in process.

Had my interview today, applied in December for Victoria and Piccadilly, had passed all assessment with another TOC. Received a phone call on Monday inviting me for an interview. Just a waiting game now.

I have passed all assessments and MMI with another TOC. Did your status change on the DB site before they contacted you?

I never checked my status didn't expect to be contacted so soon. My status says assessment.
