a nodding donkey if your 'really' lucky.:D:lol:

Well I've looked on Wikipedia and I'm hoping it's a 150 or a 153 but thanks for the warning.

the loco hauled service does not serve Barnstaple nor Exmouth.

I'm aware of this which is why I'm only doing Bristol Temple Meads to Paignton on it, there is a direct service to Paignton from Paddington but it gets me there far to late for my onward connection.

That's an incredibly long time on the same unit!!!

Yes but considering I have a very long day ahead, ie 3am start and not home until 10pm...you can't blame me for wanting to stay on a unit to get some sleep if possible.

You won't be sleeping on a 142!

However, i've just looked and I think that diagram is booked 150+153, it certainly used to be.

Ah cheers, surely looks like I'm getting closer to my quest to travel the whole FGW empire much as I've done with FCC.

Quite interesting these rides out can be when you learn new things about all the different parts of the railway.

Take my last jaunt to the Thames Valley, I found Maidenhead station to be quite interesting as the rest of the route indeed was.

Gives me something useful to do while on leave.

*Just curious, how much time do one need to commute between Kings Cross St Pancras and Waterloo on the Northern line as I need to know this for a future trip on another diagram, :)

TfL wants me to go via Oxford Circus and change there but I don't see why when there's a direct service available.

Not unless you take the Northern Line to Euston and change there for the West End branch to Waterloo...The only other way you can get from Kings X to Waterloo is also via the Vic and Bakerloo via Oxford Circus...

Otherwise, time wise, id say you could do it in about 20 mins, but then again that does depend on services running to time...

I can walk to Euston as it's not that far from Kings Cross, if it was a 30 minute walk I would use LUL to get to Euston for a connection.

Can we keep this topic for the FGW loco-hauled services, ta

Booked on the 07:45 Dublin-Bristol for €35 on Monday, not too dear considering it's only a few days away. Two things,

(1) any idea when the locos change on the set? I'm going over specifically to get 57303 and I will be very upset if it is taken off at the weekend when it goes to Canton.

(2) Any ideas of cheap ways to bash these? I was checking out a 3 day freedom of the South West for £70, off peak fares are generally £20 return between Taunton and Cardiff, but I'll be doing two trips hopefully on Monday and I assume a few on Tuesday. Haven't devised a way home yet or when I'll go home, depends on the weather, which I believe is to turn quite snowy.

Try looking fro some advance fares such as cardiff - bristol & bristol - Taunton

LHCS are non reservable so therefore no Advance tickets.

Why not get a FOSS (Severn & Solent)? Covers Taunton - Cardiff and is half the price of the Freedom of South West

Well I've had a lovely day made even better by about 4 hours on a single Class 142 exploring some of the lines in Devon.

I got to Kings Cross rather early about 6am as I wanted to get to Paddington in time for my 7am departure, so got myself some refreshments and headed to use the LUL services to Paddington.

Somehow used the H & C line without realising it but no matter, had plenty of time when I got there only for the first of many problems to crop up.

My 0700 departure to Bristol Temple Meads got delayed due to having to step up a member of train crew, the intended guard wasn't available so FGW got a guard from somewhere and we only suffered about a 2 minute delay.

Got the chance to enjoy the First Class on the way down and noticed the seating in the buffet carriage hadn't yet been refurbished and was of the older style seating ie not leather.

Got to Bristol Temple Meads and as I was coming onto the platform, the train was rolling in - same stock as I had when I did Taunton to Cardiff Central not so long ago except the 67s might have been changed.

Guard gave me a shock when I came out of the toilet, was looking around the vestibule in awe of the technology used but apart from that and seeing how close the water actually is to the line at Dawlish, it was a good trip made even better by a group of young ladies doing their impressions of the Village People completed with builders, short dresses etc...joining the service.

Anyway, got to Paignton and found the guard of the 142 which was to take me to Exmouth via Exeter St Davids then onto Barnstaple and finally getting off at Exeter St Davids.

Now this guard either is very good at his job or has a short term memory loss like I sometimes have as I checked with him before boarding to which he was fine and gave me a thumbs up to say so then got checked 4 more times by the same guard. Nowhere else have I came across a guard so though in his duties.

His relief was good, double checking I didn't want any of the request stops to Barnstaple and where I was going.

Anyway, back to Exeter St Davids I got on one of the named express's which got held at Taunton due to signalling problems, still enjoyed the First Class though, :) and got delayed at Reading waiting for a platform.

Ran to catch my FCC only to see my watch running 2 to 3 minutes fast,

Got home, typed this.

I must say though, it was a interesting and eye opening day and strongly suggest if you can take the chance to sample the haulage even if it's 67s then do so.

Taken from Charlie Humes excellent website www.nwrail.org.uk noticeboard

Particularly interesting are the locomotive-worked trains currently running for FGW, thanks to the shortage of diesel railcars. This train, in the last week of the 2008-9 timetable, was was the 07:28 Taunton - Bristol Parkway, hauled by 67 016 with another 67 on the rear of the rake of Cargo-D Mk2 coaches.

From the beginning of the new timetable on 14 December, there are now two locomotive-worked diagrams in the area on Mondays - Fridays. The 67s work as follows:

2C67 08:00 Cardiff Central - Paignton 11:25
2U20 12:47 Paignton - Cardiff Central 16:29
2C85 17:00 Cardiff Central - Taunton 19:15
2M68 19:18 Taunton - Bristol TM

Note that 2U20 makes a reasonable connection at Newport with the northbound express to Holyhead.

A pair of Class 57/3s with a rake of Anglia-livered coaches works:

5D07 07+05 Bishops Lydeard - Taunton 07:22 (Empty coaches)
2D04 07:28 Taunton - Bristol Parkway 09:03
2Y10 09:13 Bristol Parkway - Weston Super Mare 10:01
5Y10 10+10 Weston Super Mare - Taunton 10:35 (Empty coaches)
2U14 11:02 Taunton - Cardiff 13:24
2C79 14:00 Cardiff - Taunton 16:02
2U24 16:13 Taunton - Cardiff 18:17
2C89 19:00 Cardiff - Taunton 21:08
21+12 Taunton - Bishops Lydeard 21:37 (Empty coaches)

This train is operated by First GB Railfreight drivers, using hired 57/3s and 57 316 hauled the first train, so we had an GBRf-hired Arriva-branded Virgin Trains Class 57 hauling with Anglia-liveried coaches on a First Great Western service! Note the use of the West Somerset Railway's overnight stabling facilites; the train will run to Cardiff Canton at weekend for servicing. Unfortunately 57 316 failed during the first day, and had to be replaced by 57 303 after the train was taken to Oxley depot by the other 57/3.

what time does the FGW 57's call at Filton Abbey Wood? If they don't what time do the 67's call there?

2D04 0728 Taunton - Bristol Parkway also calls there at 0857 which is a nice plus off the 0800 Cardiff - Paignton which is 67s......

Heard the same regarding 303 on 2C89 last night (thanks Mr. Nolan for the gen), however she's reported as out with 315 again today.

Uber delays this morning thanks to a points failure at Norton Fitzwarren, 53 late at Highbridge! Caped at Bristol TM, 2Y10 to start there. Ta to 2 or 3 gents on SWRG for the gen :)

57 303 was quite claggy i must say when they left for Canton

I didn't see any clag out of either 57 in that video of yours!

57315 and 303 DIT worked the 11xx off Taunton to Cardiff quite happily today. Dunno what the delays after STJ were about though, lost nearly 13 minutes because of them though!<(

Well flew over from Ireland on Monday and scratched off my long sought after 303. Flight inbound about 45 late which wasn't too bad considering the amount of flights cancelled altogether.

Started off on a Vomitter down to Weston where I picked up 57315 on the 11:02 ex Taunton for the run to Cardiff. I was delighted to see 303 on the rear d.i.t. I remember thinking cautiously that 57303 had better re-start as I know from experience with our 201s that GMs are generally useless at starting in any form of cold weather, never mind the "wrong type of cold".

I was delighted to see it leading into Cardiff ready to form the 14:00 back to Taunton which I travelled throughout. The stock is a bit rancid compared to the cargo-d set in use on the 67 diagram and 5929 has absoloutly no heat so beware if you're going down.

Back on the 16:16 to Cardiff then which is where the farce happened. Ran off to Mc Donalds and returned about 18:55, no sign of the stock for the 19:00. Then it came up on the screen "expected 19:05". 19:05 came and went, then the screen just showed "delayed". As per my earlier fears, I assumed that 57303 wouldn't start. The 158 for the 19:30 Portsmouth came in and occupied platform 2 so I knew I was bowled by this stage.

This was confirmed shortly after when they confirmed the 19:00 was caped altogether. So lost 83 miles of loco haulage, had Travelodge booked in Taunton so no choice but to do the units back. To add insult to injury, while changing at Temple Meads, I went over to phot the 67s coming in, and just as they arrived what goes through in the other direction, but 57303 and the e.c.s. They obviously got her going. Wasn't too annoyed as sole purpose of trip was to bag 303, had it failed earlier then I definitly would have lost it.

Tuesday I wasn't bothered getting up for the 07:28 ex Taunton for fear that I'd be bowled again so stayed in bed and started off on the 67s to Paignton which I enjoyed as they are that bit noisier than the 57s and you can actually hear them for the front coach. Cargo-D stock in much better nick than the Riviera and heat working thankfully.

Returned on the 12:47 ex Paignton as far as Yatton where I leaped for the 57s back to Taunton. 57303 seemed to have survived the night and was working ok, albeit late. Last move of the trip was the 16:16 ex Taunton back to Bristol with 57315 where I bailed for the bus to the airport.

Flight home just one hour late while passengers booked on the cancelled 19:15 flight to Glasgow were boarding a coach for a very very long journey northbound by road. An enjoyable trip, 57303 scratched and Newton Abbott-Paignton / Weston-Uphill Junction winner track. Now Virgin, looking for 301, 310 or 311 to be allox next please...
