Trust me, the chaos that will ensue if Brexit doesn't happen on time will make no deal look pretty tame.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

Why, what are you planning?

It's bilge, of course. If a few extra months of discussions need to happen so a deal can be passed the country isn't going to explode with rage.

You going to take to the streets and destroy property and beat up anyone who does not agree with you. :)

Not personally, but I can see some level of disorder happening, certainly more disruptive than a no deal Brexit. I'm very moderate compared to hardcore Brexiteers.

Look at the ^yellow vests^ in Paris. There is also quite a lot of upset among us Brexiteers about politicians who are seen as sell-outs or worse.

Great, so if the hardcore brexiteers (Who are not a majority) don't get their own way there will be violence. Sound like a nice bunch. Is this just project fear?

So the British government has ordered extra ferries and opened extra harbours as Poole, Plymouth and Hull (this one not sure) to lower demand in Dover.

So the British government has ordered extra ferries and opened extra harbours as Poole, Plymouth and Hull (this one not sure) to lower demand in Dover.

And has given a contract to a company which has never run a ferry service and has no ferries, just to avoid giving the contract to French or Danish registered companies.

BBC News said:
Concerns have been raised over the readiness of a British firm contracted by the government to run extra ferries in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Seaborne Freight was awarded a £13.8m contract this week to run a freight service between Ramsgate and Ostend.

The firm has never run a ferry service and a local councillor said it would be impossible to launch before Brexit.

The government said it had awarded the contract in "the full knowledge that Seaborne is a new shipping provider".

The experts own this company which was set up especially to provide this service, if required.

Yet some of the directors have had no previous experience of being company directors for any business - shipping or non-shipping and one of them who has previous experience was at Mercator Ship Chartering Ltd, which became insolvent within 3 years of being formed. And if things go wrong I'm sure the pro-Brexit media will put the blame on Jean-Michel Copyans who is a director of Seaborne Freight and is a Frenchman who lives in France - maybe he's actually the expert considering companies registered in France wouldn't be listed on Companies House. ;)

I don’t think there would be violence (unlike, apparently, what might happen if the nice bunch in NI don’t get their way), however I do think there would be a very major long-term malaise towards the political establishment, continuing a rot which seems to have set in from the Blair years (over promise and under deliver) onwards. In the long term I fear that could be highly damaging.

there is plenty.

why do you think they offer the "charlemagne" prize to all the movers and shakers?

Errm, Charlemagne led the Holy Roman Empire, a completely different entity to the Roman Empire of old. Even at its greatest extent, a fair sized chunk of the current EU was outside it.

Jonny thinks there would be violence, I do. Going against the referendum would be highly damaging but unless it gets violent it will be minimal compared to what we have already done to ourselves.

I was wrong with Hull (they have already ships from the Mainland. Add Ramsgate and Portsmouth as harbours. Are transporters willing to pay extra for the longer route of the ferry.

But how is trade treated that moves through the Channel tunnel? Where will the inspection of import and export of goods happen?

We already have a damaged political system - at this moment it seems to be hard to find many politicians for whom *anyone* has much time or respect for. Even Tony Blair, whom I utterly detest, I had and have an ounce of respect for the fact that he was at least a formidable political operator, even if an appallingly odious one.

Now we have two awful leaders, a mayor for whom the pinnacle of his political ability seems to be to publicise his name on bus stops and in Tube cars and stations as well as a bizarre passive-aggressive spat with the president of the USA, and a bunch of prats in the commons who carry on like a drunken egotistical junior debating society.

The political system wouldn’t be able to reconcile the mother of all broken promises. A broken promise *and* a clumsy failure to deliver - not a good advert for our democracy by any means.

You seem to have some double standards. The theoretical threat of violence if Brexit doesn't happen is awful, yet the theoretical threat of violence in Ireland, which you frequently warn of, is a legitimate justification for not leaving.

Ah, another person who has no idea how international shipping works.
