Regardless of what is currently happening their ought to be enough staff on a rosta to cover all duties during normal working, then overtime can be used, paid at a premium rate, to cover needs. The Sunday issue needs to be sorted, even if done gradually with new starters.

penalties for not running trains due to staff shortage should be set at a punitive level so that ir hurts the TOC's to cancel.

Without raking all this up again for the umpteenth time, there are traincrew agreements between company & unions & these have to be adhered to. You do not have drivers or guards taken on on differing contracts. One for all & all that.

Sorry but you sound like an RMT negotiator, Without even discussing anything you jump in and say sorry can't happen. eventually you will get a government with courage who will, just after an election, do the same as the underground did in the eighties. after long period of failed negotiations told the staff sign or go, they signed, it would only take a month on the trains to do the same and it could happen.

Much better to negotiate a settlement then to have it imposed.

ASLEF if you please. No point as nothing to negotiate. Been there, done that, not interested.

Not sure what the modern world has to do with anything. Major shops & supermarkets are still only open for six hours.

Technically open all the time online and this isn't the case in Scotland - the 6hr rule doesn't apply as far as I could see when I have been up there.

*It should also be pointed out the only day I'm actually aware of when my locdal supermarket was catually closed with on one there was Christmas Day. The rest of the time the store was still working including Easter Sunday - just no customers in the store.

All of this fuss over an admittedly disappointing but also relatively marginal number cancellations. Doesn't seem to be out of line than the general average of Sunday shortages, which suggests XC did a good job of mitigation??

Of course, the long term permanent problem needs to be tackled, no question about that. We've discussed it many times before though.

Just a reminder that this thread is to discuss the current issues with XC lack of train crew.

If anyone wishes to post a speculative idea for a long term solution to such issues that isn't related to the current dispute, please create a new thread in 'Speculative Ideas'

Also just a gentle reminder that if anyone is unhappy with any post, as stated in our forum rules, please "please alert us to it, by reporting it"; if you wish to request a post is deleted it is important not to re-publish it, refer to it or react to it. There is always something to negotiate, there has to be on this point or eventually things will swnap.

What you are saying is that people should, for eternity suffer bad services and cancellations on Sundays because there is nothing to negotiate, if this is not correct please explain what should be done to sort these issues with Sunday coverage please.

That was in reply to Boxing Day not Sundays.

Which is actually far less easy than it sounds. It will cause a significant problem with structuring the rosters and diagrams if you have two sets of staff on completely different ts and cs doing the same job at the same location for the same company, especially at smaller depots.

The same applies for station staff, you might have one group of stations on a line working 7am to 3pm, 3pm to 11pm then 11pm to 7am and you have the other group on the same line working 6am to 2pm, 2pm to 10pm and 10pm to 6pm which means that if someone finishes at 7am having started at 11pm the previous night for example they cannot start a shift at 6am the following day as there is less then 12 hours rest which is breaking the law which resulted from the Hidden inquiry a few decades ago.

That's just one example, with train crew it would not be that simple as the poster above has posted.

I have to say that 0700 to 0600 is rather more than twelve hours rest! Going from nights to earlies like that, even if it’s 0600 to 0600, has always seemed like bad practice to me; indeed, rostering principles at most places require 32 hours over a rest day.

A couple of cancellations on the Stansted Airport route this afternoon due to no traincrew.

Some horrendous overcrowding on the route today as well due to some services bring shortformed 2 car vice 3 car.

1322 Birmingham to Stansted lost around 50 minutes as a result of the previous service being cancelled due to no driver and the subsequent overcrowding.

How long did it take them to fix that signal failure between Whittlesea and Peterborough this morning? I'm just glad my train ran as booked and as formed although delayed by said signalling issues.

Mine being the amongst the first affected still the only other thing that occurred on my service was coming to a stop rather sharpish in the middle of nowhere so apart from that my trip this morning was fairly average.
