Set OC30. Not one of those that has been stood down.

From what you have described, that suggests some pretty serious water ingress if it is having that effect in the passenger area. A good example of what Wabtec are having to sort out on the vehicles they are converting.

Yes, but two complete sets have gone up there over the last 10 days or so to be stood down, and one has come back out again. I expect there will be more of this over the coming weeks as mileages are managed and sets kept operational for handback to the owners at lease ends.

Unlikely. I suspect all the 409xx vehicles are not going to be used again. Remember they are First owned so handback to the owner is a rather different proposition to vehicles going back to Angel or Porterbrook.

Fair enough bit silly repainting all those buffets into GWR green when they are not going to be used. I guess its to cover up all the rust holes and bubbles of peeling vinyl I suspect.

Well if they're First owned, then doesn't it make more sense to use them over Angel/Porterbrook vehicles

Not really, as you might as well use the leased vehicles if a) their lease is not up yet and b) they don't need any heavy maintenance (C4/C6).

GWR also appear to be using the 407xx catering cars in preference to the other types, presumably to make diagramming easier as the fleet is standard then.

I do like the HSTs, but they are starting to become an embarrassment. My Finnish wife delights in telling her compatriots, to hilarious reaction, about these weird British trains, still in mainline service, where you actually have to pull the window down, lean out and open the door from the outside in order to exit. It’s a bit like those old Instant mash adverts from the 1970s where Martians are explaining to each other, while giggling uncontrollably, how Earthlings still make mashed potatoes by peeling the raw vegetables and then boiling them and then beating them by hand.
