Greater Anglia's PR team have put out a couple of items regarding the new Stadler trains:

- this tweet, with a picture of 755406 at Crown Point https://twitter.com/GreaterAngliaPR/status/1075757065350602753
- this explainer piece talking about the testing and introduction of the new trains. https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/abo...ins-have-arrived-–-why-cant-i-travel-them-yet

The first new trains come into service in the middle of 2019 and they’ll all be in service by the end of 2020.

I used a Fisa Lean seat today. I found them to be quite nice. Bodes well for these new trains. :)

Whilst I'm not the LEAN's biggest fan, it isn't totally uncomfortable, the problem is that most places that the LEAN has been used it has been in ultra high density, because that is pretty much the market segment it is aimed at.

Lots, but what does that have to do with this thread?
Because currently there's a lot of new stock being introduced with very poor reviews of seating comfort - Anglia are one of the few operators that seem to stand a good chance of getting that right but not everybody has issue with the most complained-about seats (e.g. those on 700s and 800s) so I was keen to see whether you had any observations on those and how the FISA seats compared. I gather the main reservation here is about seat pitch rather than padding quality but the latter is very much a hot topic at the moment.

Ah very well, I interpreted your reply incorrectly.

So I have used basically every new seat, those being the ironing board, the ironing board on steroids, the square ironing board, the 800 seat, the 800 'first' class seat, the 700 first class seat, and the Quantum seat.

I personally can't stand any of the ironing boards, and despise both 800 seats, but don't particularly mind the 700 first class seat, and like the Quantum seat (for a short distance commuter service). I consider the Fisa Lean to be a massive improvement on ALL other modern seats, and an acceptable seat for regional services (which is what the GEML runs basically are).

There's no denying it, it is a hard seat, but there is actually limited padding, and it is well shaped (rather than just being a completely flat surface which is then described as 'ergonomic').

Onwards and upwards my friends! :)

Yes, apologies, that earlier post was written in haste :)

Sounds like you're better placed to comment than I am then, I've used most of those but not the 800 first class seat or the 385. It's interesting you say you're not as bothered by the 700 first class seat vs. the 800 standard as I thought they were basically identical. I would concur that I find the quantum seat less egregious than most of these here, but I don't know if I'd really rate a 3+2 Quantum seat any higher than a 2+2 ironing board a la 387.

So you'd rate the FISA seat as superior to all the above? That's pretty promising. I look forward to trying it for myself. I'll definitely try and make some unnecessary journeys to track these down when they start being introduced as being my home area, that'll be a lot easier to do than with other fleets.

If you ever find yourself on a travelcard, with spare time, go to Waterloo and you might be lucky enough to find a refurbished unit lying about that's not due out for a while.

Oops, I never actually put where I used it in my original message.

It was the first class interior on a Class 444:

Same cushion shape as the ones in standard on the new units:

Shows how much attention I've been paying then, I had no idea they were changing the seats to LEANs. I do very occasionally use 444s but it has been a while since I've needed to and I don't normally use first but I suppose I could potentially make an exception. By the looks of things they're leather/faux-leather? I actually prefer fabric seating, so those do look quite nice. The image you've chosen there does make the window height look a little concerning for the non-elevated seats, though.

Upright doesn't have to be bad - the main reason I dislike Ashbourne seats is how much they lean back. Most well-reviewed rolling stock seating is quite upright. It's just a question of the ergonomics of the shape and the thickness of the material used on the base versus the back.

I agree about Ashbourne seats. Awful things. I think however seats have gone too much the other way now and are too upright. It means that your entire bodyweight is vertical through the base cushions, leading to discomfort more quickly. A degree of rake spreads the weight into the back so even a very hard seat can remain comfortable for a longer period.

I expected/hoped to see some of these on my trip to Norwich today. I expected they'd be stables in the new sidings at Crown Point, but they were empty. Must be tucked up out of sight somewhere.

Crown point is a heck of a lot more secure than Victoria sidings or the random section of Mid Norfolk Railway they are going to use for stabling stock during the transition (if either/both of these plans are still expected to happen).

They are currently tucked out of sight behind the shed. Not really hidden, just the best place for them currently. Sometimes one can be seen either on the fuel pad or sticking out of the shed.
