Today at a London Overground station I asked to renew my Gold Card season ticket, which is for a route nowhere near London. The clerk got out a blank Travelcard, and I pointed this out. He said "it's the same thing", and that he didn't have any of the normal type. I preferred not to risk confusion, so I decided to get it somewhere else.

If I'd bought the ticket on Travelcard stock, might it have caused problems? I mean when used as a season ticket/Gold Card, not trying to pass it off in London as a valid Travelcard.

More generally, if someone needs a ticket to travel immediately and the clerk doesn't have the right stock, is the solution to get them to write something on the ticket, or something else?

There is no procedure. The fastest way to get around the problem is to try buying somewhere else.

Did the clerk explain why they couldn't issue it on Gold Card stock? Maybe there was a fire or a flood in the ticket stock store this morning?

Thanks - it was Gold Card Travelcard stock. He didn't mention that it wasn't standard. When I pointed it out and asked if there were no standard ones, he didn't explain why.

A ticket office should never be issuing on the wrong stock. They should simply not issue if they don't have the right stock. Obviously they should be ensuring they do have the right stock.

And tell them to stock up for the future as the guard of the stock you are riding on may take stock of the situation and have you put in the stocks for your misdemeanor. <(
