Gracious, but that's another ugly beast. I am surprised at Siemens, as I think the Desiros and 333s are very well styled.

Don't like the look of that. Looks like it's had a smash at the front. :|

Don't like the light clusters, don't like the gangways. Oh dear, oh dear!

I don't think it'll look too bad when the coupling's got dirty and no longer stands out so much, and the corridor connection is 'folded in'.

However, I'm unhappy to note that - as far as I can see - it suffers from the modern-train-design obsession with tapering bodysides as though it's going to tilt - which it isn't. Why? What's the point? Why lose space? Why make the train feel more claustrophobic than it actually is, giving people less shoulder/head room?

I'm disappointed, as the 350s do not do this - the cross-section of a 350 would show a design that makes the very best use of the space available in the loading gauge, which is one of the reasons they feel so spacious and airy inside.

Not impressed.

Although it was Siemens first foray in to UK EMUs I believe the 332s and 333s use a CAF bodyshell. Only the traction is Siemens on them.

not really. The 172s probably wont have such a large buldge for buffers.

There is already a computer generated image of the 172s, they look extremely similar to 170s. There will be a gangwayed version of them, 172/2s, of which I haven't yet seen an image though.

Hardly a new thing- what about all the "PEP" based units (313-315, 507&8)? Even Mark 3s (both crriages and units) have a slight taper. I'm also not sure that the sides of the 350/450/444 (and 360?) bodyshell profile are as vertical as you think they are, and that the paint job on the 380 makes the sides look more tapered. Paintjobs can either accentuate or hide these sort of things.

Exactly...Hence why the Northern Ireland Railways basically have the same body as the 332/333s, bar the front which was done becasue of the cost of reproducing the unnecessary curved glass windscreens...

Jonathan's site is indeed fascinating; Scotrails' 380 not so!

When they were first spoke about i remember ' i think' that the top of the connecting door slides back, someone will no doubt correct me if i'm wrong.

One thing i dont get about these units is why has siemens tried to have a go at The Juniper Effect...With the wretched mooveable corridor...

From the looks of the pictures, it is currently in couple mode...unless they are about to couple up, the corridor will recess slightly further back...

Also...Why has Transport Scotland gone for the most Dismall Interior i think ive ever seen since BR...One Lighting strip just make it look like a half finnished job and adds to the cheap look...Just as Stagecoach did with Alexander and there Olympions...Go on a Agecoach Olympion upper deck, youll notice the cheap seats and single lighting strip...go on any other olympion...say the Belfast type...and youll notice quite a difference interior...better seats and far better lighting strips...X2

As for the Moquette...Is it me or do those seat covers look like they were intended for a high street bank...

Overall id say im not impressed with those new units...which id hardly call desiros...They look bizarre and boulbus...Almost as if the train has had an allergic reaction to something...and that interior looks cheap...

Why does this have to be the year of Ugly Design:idea::roll:...

I think the unit looks great, and the fototopic thats on is amazing!!!

Me too. I like them. They are a hell of a lot better when the corridor's folded away, though; more streamlined. And I think the interior looks really good. I personally can't wait to see them out and about in Scotland, and I'm looking forward to travelling on one.

This is a stab in the dark, but it's probably because both use the Saltire as the company logo.

The Siemens Desiro Fleet does have a very slight taper at the bottom...As does the CAFs which are slightly furthur up - about window level...Bombardiers products do have a pretty ugly taper but not as much as these 380s...

True...But that moquette makes me think they brought it from HBOS...

and thats a bad thing?

I prefer the look of the new Desiro City front end, but that has no corridor connections.

Hate to disappoint Daimler; they're actually tapered. From the shot inside, the taper looks similar to that of the x50 body, outside it looks slightly more so, although I think that is a combination of angle of shot and the angle of nose.

350/444/450 bodies do taper. Look at the ends, where the profile is effectively square. You can see the shaping in the bodyside where the taper is brought in.

As to the 380s, that front end doesn't look right to me. The 360 is crying out for a corridor connection, the 380 is crying out not to have one!

Sloping fronts are now required for new designs across UIC territory. Underneath the streamlining is a mass of reinforcement to protect the driver from impacts like the 158 at Barrow on Soar.

Bombardier have said their new Electrostar nose will not have connections as a general option, only custom built at great expense.

And there is the Chinese attempt

If you look on the continent, you'll see a lot of beefed up noses on new stock :)

Curved fronts are much more pleasing to the eye. The electrostars and desiros didnt actually look to bad with corridor connection, largely as they aren't bulbus and puffed up.

Great to see the 380's in the flesh. Much needed and it seems the mock-ups displayed at central a while back were pretty close to the real thing.

A great photo website that the pics are on.

Great laugh reading the aesthetics committee on here knocking every single detail of the design. As a regular commuter on the Ayrshire and Inverclyde Lines, I'll be glad once these come along and get rid of the 318's and 334's.

Hmmm 334 are pants, but the 318's are quite nice after their recent refurb - beats the 158's!

Has anyone got square-on pictures of the ends of other Desiro classes for comparison?

You can make it out here.

Not the best example, but its a start!

Another one here, although again not very clear. You can just make out the slowly tapering sides.

This clearly shows it. Look at the inside of the open passenger doors.
