The drivers are very vague and secretive about their reasons.

Really. I thought there are many posts here outlining why the drivers are peed off. The main one being the insulting 0% pay deal after all the hard work/overtime put in by lots of staff for all the training and new route learning program this last year. Also why didn't the company say this back in April when the talks started. Because they knew there would be all this backlash and drivers not working overtime. If this had happened a few months ago then the driver training program would have gone out the window as they relied heavily on drivers working rest days. There would not have been enough drivers trained up for the new 377's which would have caused problems.

I feel the need to add that the driver training is no-where near finished. I know drivers who start their training in August 2010. And this comes from the driver himself as he's been inform that. So yes the driver training is partly the problem.

Are we talking 377 training? As I see it the amount of drivers off training is very few (3 at the moment) and not anywhere near enough to cause all these delays, no where near at all!

They can't expect support from customers if they're nor even willing to tell them why they are in this situation...

Exactly what kind of 'support' can a passenger give to the drivers?

The drivers and FCC should be honest and open about the cause.
The drivers are very vague and secretive about their reasons. I'm sure they're perfectly acceptable reasons, and I don't see why it's necessary to keep it behind doors. If they had a good support base from the customers, they'd surely be in a much stronger position to receive what they want.

Are you sure. This forum is full of reasons why the drivers are not happy.

I won't go on as I was on early this morning so am tired so could someone please explain to me what the various references all over this thread (and others) are regarding public/customer "Support/Sympathy?. Exactly how can the public show support/sympathy to the drivers that would make any difference to the pay talks?

Yes the date of August 2010 was for 377 training which is now likely out the window but I feel this is the reason why FCC put out they are still doing training. But your right as its no where near enough to cause the current problems. I also believe there is some outstanding Sevenoaks training but I haven't had an update on this since a few weeks before the current issues.

The drivers are not hiding there views at all. This whole situation has been building for a long time. Thats why I dont see a quick end to this any time soon but just watch it get worse as we head towards xmas.

So you're telling me the drivers have gone and told Joe Public their reasons for their action?

Majority of FCC customers are oblivious. If I were not a rail enthusiast I wouldn't know either.

In an ideal world, the customers would boycott FCC. In Bedfordshire there is the ECML, WCML and MML. I know In reality that'd never happen but it would be nice if they made the effort.

Ha Ha! I have just laughed my f***ing head off at your last comment.

Try flagging down an EMT Meridian at Leagrave in the morning. For local passengers there are no alternatives. I could drive the 15 miles or so to Leighton Buzzard and pay a King's ransom to park there or the ten miles in the opposite direction to Arlesey and do the same thing. One choice is still FCC and the other, London Midland is only marginally less appalling. I could drive to Milton Keynes and try to squeeze onto a Virgin Train, but I'd rather walk the ten minutes to my local Thameslink station and save a few polar bears in the process.

FCC already has my £4,000 for this year's legalised extortion it likes to call an annual season ticket and couldn't give a stuff about its "customers" or staff by the looks of it. The reason Sir Moir Lockhead was able to give himself a fat pay rise this year and pay the shareholders 10% was that First Grope has been given a series of highly profitable monopolies on FCC, FGW and all the trains in Scotland (plus half the buses).

If the amount that each rail franchise raises in profit over and above the generous subsidy I already pay as a taxpayer isn't enough, then the keys can be handed back just like GNER and Nat Ex have done with the ECML.

Reality is that the BR monopoly has been replaced by a series of corporate monopolies, no, make that a cartel of transport companies.

The drivers have been strung along and are doing the only thing they can do short of a strike. Lord Adonis or whoever the Secretary of State for Transport is this week needs to drag Sir Moir into a his office and kick his backside. With DfT stipulating which trains must run where and at what time as well as controlling the purse strings that control who gets new trains and who gets the cast-offs, the railways are effectively Nationalised, its just that any money sloshing around the system is soaked up by corporate lawyers arguing over who was at fault for the last delay and how to put together the cheapest franchise bid for the next available cash cow (sorry I meant franchise).

FCC has an on-line "Meet the Directors" coming up in December via its flashy website and I heartily recommend everyone to post as many questions as possible about this topic until the management get it into their thick heads that they're a SERVICE INDUSTRY.

Stagecoach probably have the worst employee relations of any TOC, they're totally adversarial a thoroughly nasty & despicable bunch of cohorts who have the charm, charisma & morals of Saddam Hussein, Doctor Mengele & Attila The Hun all in one.

I think National Express must be a very close second or have probably overtaken Stagecoach in vieing for the worst rail company to work for. I should know i worked under NEG all through their ownership of the Silverlink franchise. Strange thing is the Managers have moved to FGW ! and NXEA ! and EMT is it any wonder these companies have poor industrial relations.

And I was shot down for saying renationalise!

The rail system works better under state control..ONE accountable body, not hundreds just ready to pass the buck so they don't have to pay

Bus companies can't run railways..fact...Now proven by this crud

So, farewell then Jim Morgan, who has departed as MD of FCC, to be replaced in the short term by Mary Grant, who is First Group Head of Trains. Mary Grant is the reason that Elaine Holt could not see herself staying with FCC , due to a clash of personalities, and so left.

It seems Morgan was a bit miffed that a certain Manager in the Operations Dept (mentioning no names, but we'll call him 'Two-Tongues' for the sake of argument) got his job back after being suspended while accusations of nepotism were swept under the carpet, er, I mean thoroughly investigated.

They seem to confuse the GN with FCC. They say the drivers failed to volunteer for work on Sunday then goes on to say FCC drivers are being balloted. All drivers on FCC worked last Sunday.

Surely FCC comprises both GN and Thameslink routes (although I know a lot of people who simply equate them to Thameslink). There was very definitely a shortage of FCC drivers on the GN route this weekend, as we in Biggleswade were left without even a token replacement bus service!

Hi there. What I meant was they commented on the GN drivers then made a comment on the TL drivers. I don't think they know the difference!

Ah yes, that makes much more sense. Thanks for the clarification!

Message on the FCC site:

It says that it is probable that up to 50% of the services on the Thameslink route will be cancelled on Thursday & friday.
season tickets from the Thameslink route will be valid for the equivalent journey on GN route services.

http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/Main.php?sEvent=LiveRunning

50% for tomorrow
More for friday.

Well seems we may have a new timetable before the weeks end.

Current FCC line, note lack of other TOCs support.

Customer information: Wednesday 11 November 2009
Wednesday 11 November

We regret there are a number of cancellations on the Thameslink route for which we apologise. There is a good service on the Great Northern route.
Thameslink route cancellations on Thursday 12 November and Friday 13 November

It is probable that up to 50% of the trains scheduled to run on the Thameslink route on Thursday and Friday will be cancelled due to a shortage of available drivers. We are in ongoing pay talks with the drivers’ union, ASLEF.

On both days Thameslink route Season Tickets will be valid for the equivalent journey on First Capital Connect’s Great Northern route. (Please note that tickets will not be valid on National Express East Coast trains between Stevenage and London King’s Cross.)

In addition car park permits valid at stations on the Thameslink route may be used in the following car parks operated by First Capital Connect on the Great Northern route providing they are clearly displayed on the windscreen:

Huntingdon, St Neots, Biggleswade, Welwyn North, Hatfield (limited space), Welham Green, Brookmans Park, Potters Bar (limited space)

Valid First Capital Connect tickets will be accepted on London Underground and London Buses on all reasonable routes.

We apologise for the delays and disruption to your journey.

FCC do of course have seven days to come up with a reasonable offer to put to ASLEF before the members get ballotted on strike action, so it's not all done and dusted just yet.

I hear the residents of Harlington are having a street party tonight, commuters are celebrating the announcement of 0% fare rises in January.

0% fare rise, with 0% of trains running.. seems like a pretty bad deal to me. :)

There is a new emergency tiemtable released for tomorrows service and will apply MONDAY to FRIDAY until further notice.

The main pattern of the service is as follows:

Half hourly service from Bedford to Brighton (1 TPH at Balcombe) calling all stations from Haywards Heath to Brighton

Half hourly service from Kentish Town to Sevenoaks via Catford

Hourly service from St Albans to Sutton via Hackbridge
Hourly service from Luton to Sutton via Wimbledon

Hourly train service from Sutton to Luton via Wimbledon
Hourly train service from Sutton to St Albans via Hackbridge

The hourly service around the Sutton loop applys DURING RUSH HOURS as well as off peak so try to go another way.

I had you down as being sharper than that. FCC are a different TOC to NXEA, so the drivers are not "going on strike again" but possibly going on strike for the first time.

Different company, same grade :)

Don't worry, I don't intend to engage in any discussion on the matter, all been said before. I'll only have 66 drivers jump down my throat telling me how hard their job is, and what profit making *ankers First are.

Of course, the vote between capitalism and socialism is really just about which self serving bastards you want in power, that's why I'm not the least bit ideological.

You all going on strike again? Now there's a surprise.

You making asshole comments again? NOT a surprise. You don't like unions,I get that..you don't like people exercising the right to withdraw their labour,I get that too..But why do you feel the need to vent your spleen over every little disagreement between rail staff and their management? Does it affect you personally? Why does everyone have to toe the line? Ever heard of standing up for yourself and not being pushed about?

I assume you don't have the right to withdraw your labour? Well,we do,and trust me,noone wants to.BUT,if it's the only way to get them back to discuss issues, then so be it.

This lot could have told us in April there was no pay this year, but they ummed and arred and dragged it out until now only to offer nothing, not even a bloody thankyou, after we have covered every possible diagram for months and months to aid them with 321 and 377 training...and then to joke that you are getting nothing, backdated to April was frankly a **** take.

And it's a ballot on an overtime ban,not strike action.

FCC drivers are not on strike..simply working to their rostered hours and contract.Which shows how much overtime is relied on to keep the railways running just on this small section

Yep, as tax payer and rail traveller, you're going to hear my comments whether you like it or not. It's called standing up for myself, I'd get used to it if I was you.

I don't dislike unions no, I dislike abuse of union power. It makes a mockery of what the trade union movement is all about.

You are entitled to your opinion,as is anyone, but where is union power being abused?

If I recall correctly, unions were established to protect worker's rights and to stop management riding roughshod all over the staff....where is it being abused in this case? And don't forget there has been NO union intervention at all so far.

And as tax payer myself and rail employee,I shall also exercise my right to gob off at all your niggly little posts too! It is also called standing up for myself..something I am quite capable of doing.
