On weekdays all Hereford - Paddington and vice-versa are HST except

1P12 0528 Hereford - Paddington (9-car)

1W02 1722 Paddington - Hereford has flip-flopped and this week has flopped to HST but that may well be due to the return 1P51 2151 Hereford - Paddington terminating at Worcester due to engineering work.

The 06.42 from Hereford to Paddington also had several days of IET operation the week before last, then went back to an HST last week, but a permanent switch is probably imminent.

Paddington this afternoon between 2pm and 3pm is the place to go for HST fans - 1415 Cardiff/ 1430 Weston / 1445 Swansea / 1500 Bristol all booked classic traction!

I'm planning to do a Hereford - Reading move on the 15th of December is the morning train PROBABLY gonna be a 800? I know this isnt a exact science this much in advance but im just trying to cover the available 800 routes as soon as then i can retire again

Indeed - but enjoy it while it lasts. Rare to be able to get a photo of 4 HSTs at PAD (albeit spread out a bit) with no IETs 'just like old times' these days.

They shouldnt have been HST's not all from my record of the other week when I went down there on the 30/31 August, Thursday and Friday.

As I and others have said numerous times, the diagrams have changed around quite a bit on a week to week basis - other trains that had previously been staple HSTs, such as 1A20 14:00 Bristol - PAD and 1A24 16:00 Bristol - PAD having become IETs this week... it's therefore only natural that some trains go the other way. All trains on the day were booked HST diagrams - none of these were 'on the day' HST vice IET.

I'm not sure if the 07:57 London - Penzance service was meant to be an HST. Was cancelled on JourneyCheck - due to a fault on this train it said. But GWR on Twitter said it was due to a broken down train.

I wasn't on this train but there's no excuse for this one direct train from Didcot & Wiltshire to Cornwall being cancelled. Hopefully XC have a double Voyager to compensate between Plymouth and pen

a. What is so different about saying it had a fault or it broke down? Whatever wording is used, the service did not run, which is what passengers need to know.

b. The only IETs on the Oxford/Cotswold services at the moment are five-car or nine-car, so taking one off that route means a cancellation. And even if an IET was available, the crew allocated to the service also need to be trained on IETs. A London crew on the first leg of the run would probably be fine, but the West Country depots are in the middle of IET training, so you might only get part of the way to Cornwall.

c. Why should a faulty train today determine what happens in a fortnight's time? The signalling on the Chiltern Line was broken south of Gerrards Cross for much of yesterday morning. Does that mean it will also fail/break down on September 29th?

I appreciate your point. But this has run very reliably for ages if I'm honest. Plus there's been problems on several GWR 125mph train services on Sundays for far too long.

For the first time in what seems ages, there is a complete GWR green-liveried 2+8 HST set running today. Anyone know why? Or is it just chance that the vehicles have been reformed into a full rake again.

Both should be IET worked barring last-minute faults or a crew issue.

Can't say I'd agree with the suggestion above that Saturday (and Sunday come to that) diagrams on the Cotswold Line are that 'messy', with IETs pretty much ruling the roost now. There is the odd HST or two on a Hereford run, perhaps one on a London-Worcester and back round trip, plus a Turbo on the 21.50 Paddington-Worcester. I think even the 15.20 from Paddington to Great Malvern/18.35 back, which was a nailed-on Turbo earlier in the summer, is now an IET.
