Hi,
I’ve got myself into a bit of a flap.
This week I’m travelling from the midlands, to Euston and then onto London Liverpool Street.
I havnt been to London for 30 years and now I’m stressing about getting between Euston and Liverpool Street Station.
I arrive at Euston at 12.59, my train out of Liverpool Street leaves at 14.00.
I’ve just been to pick up my tickets and it says London Underground Zones 1-2,specified trains and AGA connections only.
Does this mean my ticket can be used on the underground?
I thought there were no tickets on the underground and it was all Oyster card or contactless.
My actual ticket says I leave Euston at 13.32, arrive Liverpool Street 14.00 with my next train leaving at 14.00. Surely this can’t be right, it was booked through Greater Anglian booking engine.
I suppose my question is can I leave Euston much earlier than 13.32 on the tickets that I have and will my ticket work on the underground?
Arghhhhh
Many thanks for any help

Paper tickets are still accepted on the London Underground, provided they are valid in the zones you use them.

There are broadly two ways of getting from Euston to Liverpool Street by Underground.

If you feel confident you can make the not particularly well signed 300m walk to Euston Square (perhaps with the assistance of Google Maps on your phone), you could take any through train on the clockwise Hammersmith & City, Circle or Metropolitan sub-surface-level line to Liverpool Street. This would be air conditioned throughout and would only involve going up and down a few steps, as the sub-surface-level Tube lines are only a few metres below street level.

The other option would be to take a deep-level Tube straight from Euston Underground station, on the Northern line. You would take the Bank branch southbound, and then change at Moorgate to go for one stop on the clockwise Hammersmith & City, Circle or Metropolitan sub-surface-level line to Liverpool Street, as with the first option. This would involve considerably more steps, and a change which you don't need for the first option, plus the Northern line is not air conditioned and can be very warm and uncomfortable.

However, if you are unsure you could make the walk to Euston Square then the latter option is probably still the best. If you miss your booked train at Liverpool Street due to delays during the transfer, you would likely be able to take the next train.

Thank you so much, I’m going to study your information carefully and make myself a plan. Once I’ve got it in my head what I’m actually doing, I’ll feel much happier. Thank you again!

Relax, you're in good hands here.

I arrive at Euston at 12.59, my train out of Liverpool Street leaves at 14.00.
I’ve just been to pick up my tickets and it says London Underground Zones 1-2,specified trains and AGA connections only.

Yes it is. Because it explicitly states it's valid for the tube. Also, given the fact that the London main line stations are in various parts of central London. Many passengers transfer between two main line stations and a combinded cross London ticket (via the tube) saves the hassle of buying multiple tickets.

I thought there were no tickets on the underground and it was all Oyster card or contactless.
There are no ticket offices on the tube. However there are ticket machines inside the stations, is that Oyster and contactless is much cheaper than paying by cash. Anyway, it's possible to by tickets from National Rail station to a tube station.

My actual ticket says I leave Euston at 13.32, arrive Liverpool Street 14.00 with my next train leaving at 14.00. Surely this can’t be right, it was booked through Greater Anglian booking engine.
13:32 is just a guide not a rule. The tube doesn't run to a public timetable. All what's on the posters are the first and last trains, as well as the frequency.

I suppose my question is can I leave Euston much earlier than 13.32 on the tickets that I have and will my ticket work on the underground?
Yes you can. As I said earlier the tube runs a turn up and go service. You can leave earlier or later it's down to.

I recommend that you take the tube between Euston Square to Liverpool Street. The journey takes 12 minutes and is 5 stops. The trains are frequent (bar mishaps).

Here's how to get between London Euston and Euston Square Stations:

I hope that helps.

...except that you won't need to do that last wiggly bit on the google map. You go down the steps on the north side of Euston Rd and through the barrier under the road, then down again onto the eastbound platform.
I prefer to come out of the side entrance by Platform 16 at Euston then walk up Drummond St. That way I can pick up some samosas and pakhoras if Gupta are open.

Euston Square is the way to go. There are no time restrictions on the Underground part of your ticket.

Euston Square is straightforward to find from the station although I'd look it up on a map beforehand so you have a general overview of which direction to go. Upon getting to Euston Square insert your ticket into the slot at front of the barrier and it will open for you (do the same at the other end to get out), although most people will be touching contactless or oyster cards on the yellow reader on the barrier. Three Underground lines operate over the same track at this point - the Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City, all go to Liverpool Street so just get the first train. The journey will take around 10 minutes.

Euston Square Underground is definitely the easiest way.
Not sure about detour via Drummond Street to pick up samosas, much of Drummond Street is being demolished for HS2

The man in Gupta told me he is definitely not going to be affected - apart from the eventual - & hopefully temporary - closure of the direct access to Euston Station.

Hi,
I just wanted to say thank you for all the help and guidance I had a couple of days ago from you all.
I’ve now completed my journeys and to be fair London was a doddle.
I actually enjoyed it and would feel happy to go and do it again now. I might even sniff out a samosa next time too.
Thank you!!
