Does anyone know when the set will enter service or when further sets will come on stream?

On a related note, I travelled behind 67010 today. Does anyone know if and when it will be named "Charles Darwin" (or perhaps another name)?

Whilst the predictions of an appearance this week had been our intention, we have had to put that off for a few days. A small number of issues with our loco's over the last few days have meant that the priority has been working the existing service rather than to release a locomotive to carry out the final rake test before release from Axiom Rail at Stoke.

An announcement will be made as soon as we are sure where and when the set will enter traffic.

Regards

Andy

There was a bit in Rail which arrived on Saturday about the proposed ATW services to London. It mentioned that the early morning ATW service from Aber to London would not call at Shrewsbury.

Just a question about the DVT's -apart from the driver's cab and, I presume, a guards compartment, are they all just empty space inside? I can't imagine W&S carries that much luggage and bicycles - Would it be physically possible to convert them in part for passenger accomodation?

I've often wondered this myself. In all honesty, I don't see why not - after all, DBSOs were used on passenger trains in this country, and are very common abroad. I guess the work involved would be relatively significant, though, which explains perhaps why we haven't seen it happen over here.

Yes, they only have the cab, guard's office and cycle and luggage space.

I think it would be possible to convert them to have some passenger space, but I doubt the increase in capacity (Which wouldn't be very much) would be able to justify the cost of doing so.

A pity, really - I think they'd look quite smart!

The DVT`s have no passenger seats due to rules in place at the time of building that prohibited passengers in the leading vehicles of trains that travel at more than 100 mph

its possible to referb them I supose but where would the guard go?

You wouldn't refurb the whole thing with seating, only part of it, I would've thought that would be fairly obvious :?
But, as I said previously, it would almost certainly be prohibitively expensive for what would be a pretty small increase in capacity.

GNER looked at refurbishing their Mk IV DVTs to install the kitchens there for the restaurant service (with the 103xx catering vehicles becoming Buffet Standards). However, the cost of doing this was considered too much - which must have meant it'd be pretty expensive given the rebuild they did on the catering vehicles in the end anyway!

Hello all, my first posting on the forum. My Fotopic site referral system told me that a lot of hits had come from this forum, so I decided to have a look and have now registered as it seems there is much informed comment going on here!

Thanks to all for the complimentary remarks concerning the shots on my site of the interiors of the WSMR refurbished Mk.3s, and also for the largely positive response to the work that WSMR have had done on the stock - it really is a great leap forward and I'm looking forward to seeing this in normal service, hopefully in the near future.

Thanks also to all those at WSMR who have afforded me the privileges of riding on the test trains recently and also for previous cabrides etc. dating back to the training runs of early 2008. These have been much appreciated!

It's good to see that a very senior member of WSMR is on this forum which might mean that, hopefully, some of the wilder rumours that have appeared on some other forums might be dispelled. I have been trying in some of these places to add informed comment, but obviously my contacts have not always been able to let me know the full extent of what is happening as they have the matter of running a railway to contend with, which does tend to take up rather a lot of time and effort, plus of course there is the matter of confidentiality - not everything can be released into the public domain, especially when potential competitors may be looking for information. So, once again, thanks for the information that has been forthcoming!

WSMRMD wrote that there have been some problems with locos this week - certainly 67007 has been in use yesterday and today with WSMR, as a couple of their own locos are unavailable it seems. What is nominally the "spare" loco, 67010, has been in action today, along with the newly released Chiltern liveried DVT 82302. It seems this has suffered a few problems with AWS/TPWS faults and yesterday's outing was curtailed apparently. It was out again today, running 1J80, 06:45 from Marylebone, but again had problems as was reported elsewhere. It was certainly running on the rear of 1P13, 11:23 Wrexham to Marylebone, with 67010 on the front, but speculation seems to be that this only ran from Banbury. Picture here:

http://www.geoff-plumb.fotopic.net/p61126191.html

Presumably, it should then have worked 1J83, 16:33 from Marylebone, but this was operated by 67013 + 82303.

So while these sort of problems occur, it's understandable that the introduction of the new stock should perhaps take a back seat for a while until a degree of normality returns and another new step can then be undertaken.

For those not familiar with my site, there is a fairly comprehensive Wrexham & Shropshire collection available at:

http://www.geoff-plumb.fotopic.net/c1463263.html

though the most recent ones are in the "New Additions!" collection at:

http://www.geoff-plumb.fotopic.net/c900316.html

from where they will be moved eventually to their proper home.

Cheers, Geoff

I've been told that the WSMR refurbs do NOT have retention tanks yet, but they do have the capability of being retrofitted with them at a later date.

As for the Chiltern DVT, the set with it on went off to Wembley at about 15:50, with the spare set working the 16:33.

Cheers,

Barry

The loos do indeed look very tolerable... Time for the Voyagers to be refitted in that style.

Sink does look a bit shallow mind you! Like the long grab-bar.

The refurbished set of Mk.3 coaches ran today from Crewe to Wembley LMD as 5E05, 14:35 from Crewe, with 67015 leading and 82305 on the rear. It was due to recess at Fenny Compton from 17:15 to 18:14 but in the event ran straight through, so passed my location at Wormleighton (just south of Fenny Compton) around 75 minutes early at 16:57, 6 minutes earlier than its booked time through Leamington Spa. Apparently, the WSMR "powers that be" had asked that the train be "allowed to run" if at all possible. It was due for a short stop at Banbury for a crew change but that didn't happen either, and another scheduled stop at West Ruislip was also cut out, it went straight through at 18:07, 102 minutes early. It was then due to continue to Marylebone for reversal and back to Wembley LMD. I understand that its first public run should be in the middle of next week.

Couple of photos on my site at:

Don't give other TOCs ideas about adding even more recovery time into their timetables!

Some more pics on their fan page over on Facebook. Looks like some quite major changes to buffet - counter is now end on rather than at the side.

Looks like the first public run with the new stock will be the 16:33 from Marylebone to Wrexham tomorrow, Wednesday 30th September 2009. Train will be "on show" at Marylebone for a few hours before apparently.

Oh really? Sounds good - I might have to head up there!

Presumably non-ticket holders will be able to have a look round?
